⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 Review:
I recently had the pleasure of visiting Masala Kitchen & Bar, Redbergsplatsen (Ånäsvägen 2, Göteborg), and I must say, this place really left a very, very, very impressive impression on me!
The restaurant is located right at a corner in a very nice and lively area. There’s a bus stop and a tram line running nearby, which makes it super accessible even if you’re not driving. I came by car and parked at the corner — though I must admit, dedicated car parking in the immediate area is limited, so public transport might be easier for some visitors.
From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere was vibrant and full of energy — it has a colorful Bollywood vibe with an authentic Asian feel. It immediately reminded me of the warm, busy, and welcoming restaurants back in South Asia. The décor, the aromas, and the friendly staff all made it special.
I was warmly welcomed by the staff, who were extremely friendly, polite, and genuinely happy to help. One of the staff members offered me a Mango Lassi, which turned out to be one of the highlights of my visit. Served in a disposable plastic bottle, it was thick, creamy, and absolutely delicious, with a beautiful aroma of cardamom that added an authentic touch. At 39 SEK, I found it to be a great value for the quality.
The restaurant serves freshly made Halal food, which is a huge plus for many visitors, and you can actually see and feel the freshness in the preparation. I also appreciated the outdoor seating area, which was perfect for enjoying the weather while having a meal or drink.
Overall, Masala Kitchen & Bar Redbergsplatsen is more than just a restaurant — it’s an experience. The combination of its fantastic location, friendly service, authentic flavors, and lively Bollywood-inspired ambiance makes it a must-visit for anyone in Göteborg looking for real Indian cuisine.
I highly recommend this place and will definitely be...
Read moreTL;DR: Save yourself time and money by buying an "Asian Box" in the Lidl next-door.
Full story: Including myself, a former chef, we were a company of 5 on Sunday lunch, ordering 4 different dishes which all supposed to have different flavour profiles according to the menu, but ended up tasting all the same - save one dish which stood out by tasting like straight up burnt curry.
Now, although the food wasn't horrible on average, the price point will not get you your money's worth (it's not pricey).
The food on its own was not what resulted in this score - the service contributed negatively.
We felt ourselves forgotten about, and even after waiting to be presented with the menus (in what was an almost empty house) we had to wait yet again to even place orders despite making clear we were ready for a long time.
(I might add that the food took long as well, but we're not certain about whether this was an issue of poor food preparation or a delay in conveying the orders to the kitchen by the waiting staff.)
While the waiter and waitress serving us did seem to try, the young man was noticeably nervous and very clumsy. The same young man did not seem to be very familiar with the food items, and the woman was rather dissmissive and unattentive.
All in all, we felt as though we spent more time waiting around and tending to the staff rather than them to us.
The interior design was alright - I can envision the dining experience being rather cozy during dark evenings actually -, but the plating of the food was very uninspired and thus underwhelming.
I might give Masala a second chance at some point, but I wouldn't recommend a...
Read moreLast Sunday I went to get food there with my friend. It was around 20:30 but they still taking orders for take-away. The food came quick and we went home to eat, but middle of the way the paper bag broke (because some food was scaping from the plastic container) and one of the plastic boxes with food fall in the floor in the street. We decided to go back and ask them if we could get another one, since it was not our fault that the bag broke. When we were getting back to Masala, one person who works there and was leaving the restaurant heard us talking. He came to us, and apologized and took the food containers and said we were getting new food. He went back in to Masala and very quickly we got new food and they apologized for the bags and also gave us drinks for free as an apology. So it was a super nice service and the food was great as aways. To the guy who helped us: Thank you, I really appreciated it! I have been there many other times and always appreciate the food, service and the ambiance is great. So I strongly recommend Masala...
