Mahalaxmi India Restaurant — Restaurant in Baar

More spice would be very nice in this unfortunately, disappointing evening out for what we hoped would be authentic Indian cuisine. However, we would learn later from the manager that you must specify if you want the cuisine to be authentic. “Swiss people don’t like spicy food”.

When we arrived, we were already underwhelmed by the basic and shabby interior. It would be well advised to take out and not dine in. Anyone’s apartment has to be a step up from this dining room.

The atmosphere was worsened by the fact that the manager was yelling the whole time on the phone at some customer who was not happy with their delivery. This made for a somewhat awkward and unpleasant dining experience.

On the plus side, the food portions are generous, but the price reflects this. Flavors were muted and uninspiring. The Rogan josh was some of the most bland lamb I’ve ever had. Also CHF 9.50 for a bottle of water felt a bit steep, in light of the surroundings, we were drinking it in. Service is slow and even forgot one of the items we ordered. We were compensated by being offered a 10 minute lecture as to how we could’ve done better in ordering as well as a complementary Naan bread.

The staff was so overwhelmed. We had to go seek out the manager to pay our bill.

All in all - a disappointing first...

It’s been just 4 months in Switzerland, we are still finding our way ; when my son and I bumped into #MahalaxmiIndiarestautant in #Baar today - and we found our little India here . The owner was the kindest, explaining us the portions , what to order. He offered me kingfisher and refused to accept a payment for it . He asked about my son’s spice tolerance and made the food accordingly. We got stuff packed and he was so worried how we will carry it and even offered help 🥰 life is not always about how much you get ; but how people treat you and make you feel ❤️ The food is delicious ; but I will go back more just for the way the place and the people...

Absolutely excellent service and really tasty food. I ordered the lamb curry which is similar to a Madras and my wife had the vegi options which were even nicer.

Highly recommended!

Updated after 2.5 years of going here now. The service is still excellent. I have found that the veggie dishes are even better than the meat dishes.

The restaurant is always busy and that's because the food and service is amazing. 6 stars it I could.

Updated after 3.5 years. Still the best Indian restaurant I know of in the Zug and Zurich area. Still...
