It took them 40 mins to prepare my order: an oat milk latte and a cinnamon roll. I thought I could enjoy a relaxing late morning before heading to a lunch meeting with a client…. Nope - my expectation was completely unmatched.
Anyways, the coffee tasted bitter. The bitterness was the result of long extraction and I could barely taste the pleasant scent of the oat milk. The roll tasted okayish. But it didn’t make me feel that it worth 40 mins of waiting time (not even 20). It tasted more like a cinnamon roll from coffee chains such as Costa in London and they will heat it up for you in just 3 mins.
The total cost of my order was 280 NTD (£7.36) with the oat milk latte priced at 180 NTD (£4.73) and the cinnamon roll 100 NTD (£2.63). I usually spent less than £6 in average for the very same things in London - from cheap chains such as Costa to decent ones like Paul’s.
I understand that coffee is a colonial object, it’s expansive here in Taiwan. So is a cinnamon roll. What I don’t understand and somehow was offended was the mere consumerism that a lot of Taiwanese 文青 hipster coffee shops maintain - there’s little cultural appreciation, in-depth understanding or attitude.
My 50 mins time spent in this coffee shop was merely a transaction. I swallowed the cinnamon roll with the hot oat milk latte that was already cold in 10 mins. I later found refuge in 金雞園,a famous place that sells traditional Taiwanese cuisine round the corner with my client for the rest of...
Read moreLove this quiet cafe nestled in a smol alleyway near Yong Kang Park. I tried their special coffee (Sicilian coffee) but it’s not for me. The presentation was beautiful but the flavors were almost like a sparking mild cold brew-ish. The quiche mushroom and salad with Japanese dressing was really tasty! I would eat it again. My second visit I ordered an iced hazelnut latte with oat milk. Not too syrupy - just the right amount and I love the reusable straw it came with. The chocolate log cake was not too sweet (best Asian mom compliment) and paired well with my coffee. The cafe really incorporates natural elements and that’s what drew me in initially. It’s a warm and cozy environment with upbeat yet chill music at an appropriate level. There are plenty of outlets and WiFi for patrons to use! It’s a great place to study, work, read or just have some quiet time. The employees are also very nice and attentive. There’s an outdoor seating area and a restroom inside. They also offer complimentary water: warm, lemon & mint,...
