As Malaysians, we felt that Mr. Chee Kopitiam serves pretty authentic tasting dishes overall. Service was overall good with dishes coming pretty quickly. The Iced Milo did require a reminder but I'm not too disappointed.
Nasi Lemak with Sambal Prawns Overall was pretty great. The rice was aromatic and tasty. My kids loved it. The sambal was the right amount of spicy. We wishes there was more of it. The chicken was juicy and the anchovies with peanut was crunchy. The only point deduction here is the prawns would have been better if fried together with the sambal for added fragrance and taste. 4/5
Wat tan hor (Fried flat noodles with gravy) Traditionally, this should have been using a wider type of noodles called 'hor fun'. Instead, it looked like they substituted it with 'koay teow', which is narrower. However, it retained a lot of the taste and flavor which was definitely appreciated. 4.5/5
Kaya Butter Toast with half boiled eggs set Toast with kaya and butter was crunchy and generously spread. The half boiled eggs were done just right too. Too bad pepper and soy sauce were not provided separately for customers to customize the taste. 4.5/5
Ipoh White Coffee A little watered down taste. Perhaps should get it hot next time. 4/5
Iced Milo The lowlight of the meal. In Malaysia, this is usually done thick with spoonfuls of Milo and condensed milk. As is, it was not what we'd typically get in Malaysia. Definitely room for improvement. 2/5
Longan and Rambutan drink A little hard to get this wrong. It was just right. Not too sweet and filled with plenty of Longans and Rambutans. There were some white nata de Coco-like pearls added which were a little unexpected. Those were ok. My kids...
Read moreFirst visit here and I’ll definitely return this weekend! The place was packed around lunchtime and I shared a table with another seated party.
I ordered the rendang chicken plus sambal squid lunch set for $230-ish. Along with the chicken drumstick and a scoop of the squid sambal, there’s a whole hard boiled egg and a spoonful of salted roasted peanuts and some (intentionally) broken shrimp puff crackers, and a few slices of cucumber (unflavoured).
I usually keep low carb, but I couldn’t today: the curry and sambal were too spicy (for me) not to scarf down anything to temper the heat! Even the sweetened lemon tea couldn’t help much, and my eyes were tearing as I sweated. And yet, I kept eating it.
I can’t speak to the authenticity of the flavours as I’ve never been to Malaysia, but I’ve been most other parts of Southeast Asia and it tasted close enough for me, and I do love curries! There’s also a sign alluding to many of their ingredients being imported from Malaysia, and I don’t have any reason to suspect they’re not authentic.
Service is good here, about what you’d expect: fast, efficient, courteous (but not overly so).
Decor is basic, but clean and nice. When busy, it’s quite noisy with the hustle and bustle of servers and patrons and dishes. All good.
I’ve attached scans of their menus, both the lunch special sets and their more expansive regular à...
Read moreThis Sambal Seafood with Curry Chicken Rice is a truly satisfying meal. The steamed white rice is fragrant and served in just the right portion, pairing beautifully with the sambal seafood. The prawns and squid are coated in a spicy, tangy chili paste that highlights their natural sweetness, creating a wonderful depth of flavor. On the side, crispy anchovies and peanuts add a salty crunch, while fresh cucumber slices and a boiled egg bring balance with their clean, refreshing notes.
The curry chicken is another highlight. The drumstick is tender and infused with rich spices, easily falling off the bone. The curry sauce is bold and aromatic, with a pleasant heat that complements the rice perfectly, making each bite both comforting and irresistible.
Overall, this dish captures the essence of fragrance, spice, richness, and freshness. Whether you enjoy the bold flavors of curry or the fiery kick of sambal, this plate brings together the best of both worlds in an authentic Malaysian...
