I got pork soft-shell tacos, which were alright. My mistake came from ordering the corn tortillas, because the tacos disassembled themselves the moment I picked them up. Usually when you go to a taqueria and order tacos with corn tortillas, there are 2 tortillas for 1 taco, because the first layer dissolves from the juices of the meat. Unfortunately, there was only 1 layer here, so my taco shell fell apart when it was lifted from the plate. Other than that, the overall taco was pretty good when I could get a full bite with everything held together. Flavor was good and the taco was assembled well, other than the tortilla. The pork was just ground pork, and although I would have preferred something more interesting like carnitas or al pastor, the menu just said "pork" so I got ground pork tacos, which is probably what I should have expected. Looking at the menu again, there's one for pulled pork which I would assume is carnitas, so I guess I should have ordered that. It came with a few chips, some salsa, and refried beans which were pretty good. As far as Mexican restaurants in Hualien go, this is about what I would expect. Bit pricey and it was difficult to eat the taco, but everything else went well. The clerk was nice, and I didn't have to wait too long for my food. Overall, a decent taco was somewhat undermined by a lack of structural integrity, but this is still one of the more interesting restaurants I have had in Hualien. A larger menu sample size is probably a good idea, considering my main complaints are very...
Read moreMy friends and I are foreigners living in Taiwan, and our levels of Mandarin Chinese all vary, but our waitress was able to take all our orders, both in English and Chinese (and the menu also had English). We originally went to this place because one of the foreigners among us visited this restaurant years ago in Hualien, and believed the food was so great that he needed to come back and introduce it to us!
We were a party of 6 on a busy Friday night (and she was the only waitress on the floor). With only a three person staff, it was expected that there was a wait for our food. Even then, our waitress was kind enough to supplement free nachos with guacamole and salsa for our patience.
Among the food we ordered was the large cheese nachos, a small chicken salad with refried beans and rice (which, if you're a foreigner that misses Chipotle, this salad satisfied my craving for it!), the pork and chicken enchiladas, and the chicken quesadilla.
The presentation was amazing, the service and staff were unforgettable, and the food was great. It might not be the most authentic Mexican food you can find in Taiwan, but it was tasty nonetheless.
The only regret that I have is that I didn't try the fried ice cream (and the only reason I didn't is because there was no more room in my stomach after...
Read moreI didnt take pictures but I didn't have to.
I wanted to love the food because the owners are good decent hard working friendly people. Really super nice!
but honesty is the best policy after all.
The food is not as authentic as it needs to be. Its good though, but coming from Los Angeles I know authentic. We also got our order to go. It wasnt as satisfying as it would have been eaten in house. Everything crunchy was soggy.
Something was missing from each dish. Its that 'something' that makes the difference between real mexican and tex-mex.
Having lived so close to the 'border' of Mexico for 30 years you know each variety or flavor of mex quisine.
Dont let my opinion sway you, you should make your own decision about what you like or not.
Although nothing can be perfect, Dos Tacos comes close. Home away from home perhaps not, but they serve the best style of mexican they can and for the...
