MATTER CAFE — Restaurant in New Taipei

. For a café/restaurant-level experience, this visit was unfortunately below expectations. The atmosphere felt stressed instead of relaxing. The salad was soggy and had a slightly off taste, almost as if the ingredients weren’t fresh. It would have been better if the dressing were served on the side, allowing the customer to control the flavor intensity.

Service felt rushed and careless—drinks and food were placed abruptly on the table, which detracted from the dining experience. The pasta was overwhelmingly spicy, to the point where the actual flavors of the dish were lost.

One of the most off-putting moments was when two staff members began dusting and mopping the floor around our table while we were still eating, stirring up dust right next to our food. That showed a lack of basic hospitality awareness.

It's a nice, little place that has a good menu. Wait times are minimal! We ordered and the food was at the table in about 10 minutes. The chicken wings were good, but could use a little less pepper. I ordered the roast beef burger. Lots of flavor, but a little tough to chew. The potato wedges were a little soggy, and a little underdone. The soup of the day was fantastic, especially when you dipped the fresh bread in it. For the price, the food was good. But the lack of an English menu was disappointing. Looks like they redesigned the menu, so it now has English and lists the ingredients for every dish! I’ve been twice now; friends and I ordered the pan-fried chicken salad with sesame dressing, the Korean chicken nuggets, the spicy fried mushrooms with shrimp, and the salmon risotto.
