A trip up Sandimen to visit Taiwan's Indigenous Culture Park and the Shan Chuan Suspension Bridge is bound to work up an appetite! Located in Pingtung Province, this township is home to this hidden gem: 瞭望台土雞城 (Liào Wàng Tái Tǔ Jī Chéng).
A direct English translation would be something like Sandimen Observation Deck Chicken Restaurant or Lookout Tower Native Chicken City Restaurant 😄 — to be precise!
This humble native eatery has been around for more than 30yrs, serving up Sichuan cuisine infused with local aboriginal flavors.
The portions are generous and best enjoyed family-style so you can sample a variety of dishes. The food is simple but tasty. Their signature dish is the oven-roasted free-range chicken, slow-roasted for over an hour to achieve perfectly tender meat and crispy skin.
The highlight dish which I've never had before was Binglang vege—stir-fried betel nut flower, which was fresh and fragrant.
Another favorite of mine is the 豆酥鱼 (Dòu Sū Yú) — steamed fish topped with crispy granulated soybeans. It’s a must-have for me whenever I’m in Taiwan. Although it wasn’t on their menu, they kindly made it dou su style on request!
