Tien Hsiang Lo — A Refined Ode to Hangzhou Tradition
Elegant Atmosphere & Design Located on the basement level of The Landis Taipei, this restaurant integrates the iconic "Ten Scenes of West Lake" into its sleek, modern décor—think metallic screens reminiscent of willow branches and the serene landscapes of Hangzhou. This aesthetic choice sets a graceful tone, blending artistry and dining in one elegant space.
Culinary Philosophy & Craftsmanship Awarded a Michelin one-star for its high-quality cooking, Tien Hsiang Lo is a curator of Hangzhou cuisine, reimagined with thoughtful creativity. Under the leadership of Chef Yang Kuang‑Tsung, who has stewarded the kitchen for over two decades, the restaurant preserves ancient recipes—like the delicate fairy duck soup, a laborous blend of fish-ball soup and braised duck complemented by ham—with precision and care.
Signature Dishes & Highlights Fairy Duck Soup: A rich, nourishing balance of tradition and refinement; emblematic of the restaurant's ethos.
Dongpo Pork with Trio of Sides: A classic Hangzhou comfort reworked with artistry and dexterity.
Longjing Tea–Infused Shrimp: Light, aromatic, and anchored in Hangzhou's most famous flavor—the iconic tea leaf.
Experiential Touches The service experience is layered with subtle luxury and cultural flourishes. Tea sommeliers help select harmonizing beverages, while during dinner, a calligrapher will elegantly transcribe your order onto a keepsake scroll—a beautiful nod to traditions of the Song Dynasty.
Ambience & Feedback Reviews consistently note the restaurant’s refined serenity and comfort. The seating, with plush chairs and a layout that supports both privacy and elegance, earns praise as “one of the most comfortable Michelin-starred restaurants” in Taipei.
Patrons also appreciate the balance of heritage and hospitality, with one visiting fan noting how the dining experience felt both welcoming and elevated.

Tien Hsiang Lo is a revelation. Specializing in Hangzhou-style Chinese cuisine, this elegant restaurant delivers a dining experience that is both refined and welcoming—perfect for anyone open to trying something new.
My partner and I were celebrating a personal milestone during our visit—our 60th Michelin star and our 38th Michelin restaurant together (yes, we keep a list!). Tien Hsiang Lo absolutely lived up to the occasion and then some.
We weren’t familiar with this type of regional Chinese cuisine, so we were pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone—and we’re so glad we did. Every dish was not only delicious and thoughtfully prepared, but also presented with incredible artistry. The attention to detail in the plating elevated the entire meal—it was clear that just as much care went into how the food looked as how it tasted.
Standout plates included the stir-fried river shrimp with pearl peas (light, flavorful, and the crunchiest pearl peas imaginable), the water shield soup with fish ball (elegant and delicate—the lightest fish ball I've ever tasted), the yellow croaker fish with garlic (packed with flavor and beautifully sauced), and the scallops with spring gourd, which was simply exceptional.
Dessert continued to impress: a lovely almond sweet soup with Bird’s Nest, and a rich adzuki bean creamy cake that balanced sweet and savory notes beautifully.
Beyond the food, the service was exceptional—gracious, attentive, and full of thoughtful touches. One of the most memorable moments was being presented with a hand-written menu on a scroll—a stunning and personal detail that added to the overall magic of the experience.
The restaurant itself is absolutely stunning—a serene, stylish space with pillowed seating that made it one of the most comfortable Michelin-starred restaurants we've ever been to.
Tien Hsiang Lo fully deserves its Michelin star and is highly recommended—whether you're a seasoned fine-dining enthusiast or just eager to explore something new and...
Read moreQuite often heard about Tien Hsiang Lo which is famous for its Chinese cuisine but never had the chance to visit before. We were delighted that we can enjoy authentic Hangzhou-style dishes this time and brought us satisfaction and smiles back home.
The restaurant itself is modern but never lack traditional Chinese decor like horses, Four Treasures of the Study, Chinese calligraphy, and so forth. The servicemen and women are all polite and courteous and ready to provide you with the best service for your memorable dining experience.
There are countless dishes to choose from, and if you are dazzled by the varieties of dishes, I do recommend to order those signature dishes marked on the menu, as they represent the authentic and purest flavor from Hangzhou, including but not limited to, Stir-Fried River Shrimps with Longjing Tea, Tien Hsiang Pork “Don Po” Style, West-Lake Style Poached Grass Carp with Black Vinegar Sauce. These are just a few as there are so many to choose from.
Hangzhou-style dishes are famous for their simplicity in seasoning and its maximization of the original flavor from the ingredients. Shaoxing wine is heavily used in these dishes to bring up the aroma of the dish and stimulate the appetite. Zhenjiang vinegar is also utilized to balance the flavor while adding a breeze of acidity to the dish. All the dishes have distinct flavors and you don't want to miss any of them.
The expense here may be higher than the usual restaurants, but I think it's worthy to enjoy the ride every now and then. Tien Hsiang Lo is currently having two consecutive years of Michelin one-star recognition, and it's indeed worth a stop. In my opinion, there are numerous restaurants in Taipei that serve great Jiangsu/Zhejiang cuisine, but not anyone is paramount and specialized in Hangzhou-style dishes as Tien...
