Puang Thong Restaurant — Restaurant in Chiang Mai Province

tldr: It was ok, but nothing mindblowing as some suggest.

We went here by recommendation. The atmosphere is basic Thai style, which was great. No fancy bling bling. What made it a bit ridiculous was the next door karaoke mixed with a 70s-80s love song sound track on repeat. The family was fixing scooters in the back, it gave the whole thing a nice touch. Also, we were the only farang, which was nice since we value authentic Thai venues.

We ordered three dishes: ginormous prawns in lemon sauce. This one was ok, though the sauce qualifies as straight-up cordial. Phad pak kana, stir fried thai broccoli. What we didn't expect was that it came with salted dry fish. Was too salty for our taste. Last one, stir fried minced pork with prawns and lime leaves. By far the best dish, beatiful play of flavours, though basic home style cooking.

Portions were quite generous, and the quality of the ingredients was good. But does it justify the high price? Not sure. Would go again, but choose something else...

All of the reviews were true. This was really some of the best food we ate in thailand.

If you can eat spicy this is worth the short ride or walk in the suburbs.

We had hot and sour prawn soup (the owner recommended it instead of another dish) and it was amazing, the seafood salad with prawn and fried squid, we told her we ate spicy so it had a lot of green chillies and finally the braised pork ribs.

Really great combination of flavours and the owner is really nice, her mother is the cook and even have a cooking book that was edited in France.

What gem of a place! Situated south east of the Old City Wall of Chiang Mai, along the Ping River. The outdoor dining has a cozy, warm and rustic feel. It can feel romantic, though. We ordered their special dish of the day which was braised pork spare ribs which was well-marinated. The portion was a little too big for two of us but we finished it up.
