I have mixed feelings about this restaurant.
TL;DR: The restaurant has a wonderful setting, but there are glaring fundamental issues with the organisation; the staff are seriously ignorant of the customers, which is apparently a recurring issue for many customers, myself included. The food is so-so and outshined by local restaurants on the same beach walking street, especially considering the exorbitant prices charged by the Glass House. If you are a social media fiend, you like being ignored as an customer, and the quality of your food means little to you, or you are Chinese, this place is just the right place for you!
In depth summary of my experience: The restaurant had a wonderful vibe to it, with adorable indoor and outdoor seating areas. We (a family of 5) initially came along the beach to this restaurant, which we have dined at a few times before and awaited seating. Understandably, it can take a while before a waiter is available to lead you to a table, but we stood and waited for 15 minutes, with several waiters taking notice of us and simply either dismissing our requests for seating or smiling and falsely promising to help us before intentionally ignoring us after. It took us going directly to the cash register and waiting another 10 minutes inside for one of the clearly-available waiters to arrange a place to sit.
There are mostly Thai and Chinese guests visiting this restaurant, so don't expect the waiters/waitresses to speak English, though communication was alright for us given that we have Thai members of our family. You can always find a way to communicate, whether it be pointing a picture or the like.
Once we found a seating area, we ordered perhaps 7-8 different meals and some beers and cocktails, only for the waitress to return 15 minutes after taking our order to inform us that they ran out of pork belly, and the ingredients for the Lady Passion cocktail, which one of our 5 guests ordered. It is strange to run out of ingredients at 8PM, but it's not worth complaining about. When we attempted to reorder a substitute for the cocktail and the pork belly, the many waiters and waitresses would occasionally come by and take our orders, without actually relaying the order to the kitchen? It was after the 5th time ordering, and after already receiving our first dish, that our original waitress finally took our order for the replacements and apologised for the wait, commenting that the waiters in the outside seating area, despite taking orders, do not relay the orders to anyone else. After 35 minutes and 2 out-of-stock requests, our single person without any drink finally received a beer. The 8 dishes we ordered came one-by-one over a period of around 30 minutes, on top of the 30 minutes we waited for our first dish. The food was aesthetically pleasant but tasted incredibly ordinary, like the average tourist trap restaurant on the busiest walking of a city. One of our dishes, Grilled Chicken (as shown in the bottom left of the attached picture), had 2 raw chicken wings among the others, and upon informing the waiter, he promised to speak to the kitchen regarding the issue, only for him to completely disappear for the rest of the night, alongside our plate of chicken.
I am certain there are other minor inconveniences, which I don't immediately recall; Summa summarum, the experience is severely downplayed because of the several minor inconveniences adding up, which is a shame given the cute location and vibe of the restaurant. The service is impressively chaotic and poor, and the food is simply mediocre.
Our family thought perhaps the third time was the charm, but this restaurant has been unimpressive all three times we have dined there. We will not be...
Read moreHonest review of the good and not so good. First the good. Wonderful location, relaxed setting. If you want a comfortable spot to look at a great beachfront and have a meal this place has it all. Well presented and clean amenities. I've eaten at lots of places in Pattaya, and the food was ok. My lady is Thai, and said the Thai food was good, but she is rediculously polite about everything.
The not so good. The service was terrible. It was not that they were busy, as there were plenty of them around. It was on a Sunday, around 2pm so not busy at all. After entering and standing around looking lost for 5 minutes, I had to ask for a table. Sadly the guy spoke very little English, and didn't seem to understand I wanted a place to sit. Eventually seated the poor service continued. Meals were delivered, but almost haphazardly. One item we ordered failed to show up until I asked about it. The wait staff were inattentive to say the least. I normally tip all service staff who look after me, but not this time unfortunately.
I ordered Spaghetti with bolognaise. Tiny serve of Spaghetti, not freshly cooked, meal was not even warm. Garlic bread was ok, but it's hard to get bad Garlic bread usually. My ladies dishes were spicy and looked good. Once we finished eating, it took a good 10 minutes to get eye contact with a waiter to ask for the cheque. That came quickly. I tried to pay with Visa, but was told they have 1000 baht minimum purchase. I paid my bill and waited for my change. After a further 10 minutes I had to stop a passing waiter to ask for my change. The wait staff did not check on us after we ordered, or even bother to ask if we needed more food or drink.
A modest meal for two, including one beer and one bottle of water cost 900 baht.Comparitavely speaking the same type of meal elsewhere typically costs me 350-400 baht with a tip.
In summary, if you want a great view while you eat, you really can't go past The Glasshouse Restaurant. I gave 2 stars only for location. I would have loved to rate it higher because it's had some good reviews. It has great potential, however staff require a major shake up in terms of efficiency and customer service. I would be happy to pay more for an average meal with great service than a great meal with average service. If management bothers to read this I hope they can accept...
Read moreThe food is delicious and the atmosphere is nice, I’m impressed with the architecture. However I wish I could give the service less than 1 star. The service is too bad for a place that charged service charges. They could’ve divided some money they earned from selling expensive food and service charges on staff training.
First of all, I asked for a mosquito spray. The server said there’s no spray, only lotion. I asked for it and it never arrived.
Secondly, I had to say two menus repeatedly when I ordered because the staff repeated the wrong order. I literally speak Thai clearly.
Thirdly, when the soup arrived we had to asked for bowls when it’s a common thing to serve in a restaurant or am I expecting too much?
Fourth, they served us some drinks but didn’t pour them for us, only watch us did it ourselves. Again I’m expecting too much.
Fifth, we ordered 3 rice plates but it took way too long that all the food arrived already so I asked the waiter to follow up on it but there’s no answer from him, just let my request pass by. We asked for it again and he only gave us 2 rice plates. I guess they couldn’t cook the rice in time?
Sixth, there are street vendors that sell fireworks and lanterns. The vendors light the fireworks out of the blue many times and it interrupts our peaceful eating.
Lastly, bills took way too long to arrive. After we paid there’s no word “thank you” came out of his mouth. I understand that he might not be good at English but at least can just say that in Thai. Yep I expect too much from a place that requires service charge
Seeing all the 1 star reviews here and I guess they aren’t going to improve the...
