RETURN VISIT FOR DINNER: Returned for dinner with friends. Can vouch that the food here is generally delicious. The crab fried rice had good “wok hei” (char). The flavour of the “kung ob woon sen” was spot on. Would have been even better if the used the big head prawns but as is, the sea prawns used were super fresh and delicious.
Most enjoyable meal. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Part 1….
Spotted a “crab” sign and thought.. LUNCH!
Walked over at 12noon and restaurant is full!! Now waiting for a table. They gave me a menu and I know what’s for lunch “stir fried crab in curry powder”… probably back here tomorrow for lunch too - for the crab fried rice! 🤣
Thanks to Google translate, looks like I’ve bumped into a Bangsaen institution - one of the earliest seafood restaurants in town.
Looking forward to lunch. 😍
Part 2…
I’m advised by Google Maps that I am at “Jarin Bangsaen Restaurant”.
Lunch today is “Stir Fried Crab in Curry Powder” with a serve of steamed Thai Jasmine rice and a side of cold Chang Beer.
I was actually expecting a shelled crab dish but this crab meat version taste great! It’s creamier and less oily than the Bangkok versions. Also less eggy, which I like. Oooo… Yums. This is so...
Read moreMy fav restaurant since almost 30 years ago — first dined here with family when I was 3.
Was so much better in earlier generation. Technically it’s not “seafood restaurant” anymore. They turned the place to more of a casual dining with many more other food choices + bar to attract younger and wider group of customers. Generalised would be my term of choice.
Why they lost some stars — Deep fried whole grouper was my fav before they renovated the place, but now it is only by request and last time I had it was not as fresh and as beautifully fried., which makes me really sad because no other restaurant in my 3 decades of living was able to nail it like their mother (previous owner) did. Garlic squid turned out quite tough but tasted very lovely as usual.
Plus side: good food! — Crab roe dipping was very very good (as ever!!), Kale+salted fish still very impressive, and my fave Glass noodle prawn was done perfectly (hands down for the glass noodle, but prawn was not as fresh as your expectation in seafood place)
Overall I’m still happy that they are in business and can maintain some of their food quality and taste. Will dine there again for the sake of childhood...
Read moreMy Malaysian friend love this place. He recommended it. To me the steam prawns with vermicelli really not up to par with other Thai restaurants in Bkk. I was quite disappointed. The noodles were tasteless and soggy, lack of authentic spices. The rest of the orders were fine. Nothing to shout out about it. I guess I have had to many good experiences with the thai foods in Bkk and compared to my foreign friends every thai disk was good. The service hard to come by although a lot of staffs they didn't really pay attention to the beverages we had 5 peoples I total. If one of us out of drink we all have to help them rise up the arm and waves for at 10-15 seconds to have a chance to other the next beverage. The staffs did not appear to be well training how to observe the...
