Maybe you came across this place from a Michelin star recommendation and let me tell you, it absolutely lives up to that expectation.
This cuisine is a speciality from Chiang Mai, where the owner is from. Hard to find this specific kind of cuisine in Bangkok, since it’s a northern style dish.
Definitely one of the best meals I had in Bangkok on my last trip. The signature curry noodles are a must order. The broth is so satisfying rich, savory and delicious. Sides dishes are wonderful too, but make sure to bring friends, because it’s more food than you’ll be able to eat alone.
The pork rinds are nice and crispy, not too greasy. They come with a stewed tomato sauce that is tangy and wonderful. The chicken wings are perfectly cooked and come with a green spicy sauce. Stewed beef it lusciously rich. The sausage is a little bit lighter, with an aromatic flavor, maybe star anise?
The ambiance is nothing special, but comfortable and casual. Not fine dining, but more just a typical restaurant space. Not a hole in the wall either though.
This would definitely be a priority meal for me when back in Bangkok. Bring a few friends (not too many 1 - space is limited) and enjoy a delicious meal at this must visit place in the north of...
Read moreI've not reviewed this in the past, though I'm a repeat customer several times over (I always forget to take pictures truth be told). My bad. It definitely qualifies as one of the more memorable ones.
My criteria for memorable always starts with the broth. I mean, it's the broth that permeates and binds all the components ie. the noodles , protein and condiments together. If the broth fails, the dish fails. Thankfully, neither fails here. The broth is just the right consistency, not too thick or too watery with plenty of taste (though my personal preference is for an extra dollop of their oily roasted chili paste). The other ingredients just sort of supplement and build on that strong broth base, what you'd expect of a nicely constructed dish.
Ongtong is a polished establishment. By that I mean that it caters to an international crowd by virtue of appearing in numerous influential social media accounts. The staff speak decent English, there's a branding origin story, it's got a formidable local/ international following, easily readable menu etc. Service is prompt, seating aplenty, quality that is consistent over time and pricing that a foreigner would still find affordable. No other reasons needed to define the meaning of...
Read moredelicious, comforting meals with good value, considering it’s Michelin-awarded. we ordered as below :
stewed beef khaosoi - the curry soup is very creamy and rich! the beef is tender with extra richness from being soaked in the soup. this meal would be perfect during rainy or cold days 🍜
deep fried fish with rice - this one was simple but really unexpected. it was MUCH tastier than we had expected! the fish tasted SO fresh. it was truly delicious combined with the fish sauce. the warm rice makes it even better! 🤤
khaosoi with beef & rice - this one is rather simple but very rich too. the gravy is actually a bit on the sour side, rather than curry-like 🍛
fried sausages - nothing too extraordinary about this one except that the chunks are BIG and it comes with a side of cucumber & ice, which is interesting 😂
i highly recommend this restaurant for a filling meal, but my only problem was the waiting time for some of our meals. aside from that, it’s a nice culinary experience...
