Those of us who have been fortunate enough to make regular visits to Thailand, almost certainly will have listed Thai food as one of the main reasons for making these visits. And if your visit to Thailand included Hua Hin, it's hard to imagine a centre with more selection of international dining, all of great quality, including, of course, some really great Thai restaurants. Baan Itsara Restaurant is one we have been visiting for around 20 years, when we have celebrated anniversaries, birthdays and meetings with friends at this fine establishment, so imagine our disappointment when last week this turned out to be like a bad nightmare. We reserved and arrived at 19.30, and immediately noticed that the reception desk, where we would have been greeted and then shown to our table, has disappeared. Our first impressions were that this was not the usual Baan Itsara, and that the waiters seems a little casually attired, and that the whole place needed a good clean. We ordered from the menu - butterflied king prawns in fish sauce followed by fried sea bass, accompanied by Hong Kong noodles. Sadly, the prawns were not what we ordered, being whole, small and rather tasteless. When it was pointed out to the waiter, he replied that it was the same as we had ordered. We know the difference between fried and streamed fish, but the sea bass was frankly too dry, with the small amount of meat withered under excessive heat in the pan. The Hong Kong noodles - which used to be a speciality - were unrecognisable, both in taste and in appearance. We can only imagine such monumental changes since this time last year, and judging from more recent good reviews, probably within the last few months, can be accounted for by a change in ownership. We will be watching out for new reviews in the future to see what other guests make of...

This place has very fresh seafood, Thai style. We had the whole grilled sea bass, Tom yum Kung and in butter grilled big prawns. It was cooked to almost perfection. The sea bass was perfect, very tender and moisture, and it had slightly a charcoaled grilled flavour inside, the prawns were slightly overcooked but maybe we are too critical. The soup was a small portion, but delicious and in accordance to our request not too spicy. Our waiter was polite and entertaining, we appreciated it. Our table was next to the sea and we enjoyed the salty sea breeze as well as the sound of the waves. We definitely come back for more! Small parking, during the weekends it’s hectic (reserve in advance), weekdays ok. Wheelchair accessible, but only certain parts. Some tables are on higher wooden plateaus. Toilet not easy wheelchair accessible, too narrow and also...
Read morePlace was introduced by local driver. A nice setup by the beach, nice breeze even during lunch. Waiter spoke minimal english, therefore menu had sufficient pictures and translation to assist in order. Service was quick, waiting time kept at 15mins or so. LOVED the basil clams, pretty much cleared the whole plate including sauce. Fish was the last to arrive at approx 40mins cooking time (well informed during order), juicy and fresh. Very nicely done for a grilled fish. Clear Tom Yum was one of the best in Hua Hin I’ve tried so far. But sadly Crab Omelette was a BIG let down, barely any crab meat used in the cooking, felt ripped off. Overall THUMBS UP for freshness, just stay away from crab omelette. Priced higher than other similar dishes in Hua Hin. Yes, would recommend and return for Basil Clams...
