Ouch! Overrated tourist trap. I have had many seafood in many countries. This is by far the worst mine/flop that I have ever stepped on, thanks to the spectacular rating.
Price - The worst thing about some eateries at Thailand, no transparent price tag. When you look like a foreigner, be ready to be slaughtered. Weighing includes the weight of the basket. Starting price at 3000 bahts for the smallest lobster, 3 mantis shrimps, and 2 dozens of clamps. To make you feel good, they usually start high and shower you a special discount, in this case, to 2800 bahts. My wife balked at the price and wrestled to close at 2000 bahts, which we believe could be lower. A little online research after estimated about 1800 bahts per kg of lobster, and mantis shrimp about the same, market supply and season could affect the pricing but foreigner would never know because price is not transparent. Considering the lobster about half kg, the 3 mantis shrimps probably less than half kg and the clams. I would consider 2000 bahts around par or above par value. NO, seafood in Thailand is not cheap, at least not at this highly rated kitchen. Most from western countries would differ, but this is not cheap in Asia nor southeast Asia.
Quality - I don't mind paying great value for a great meal. When the dishes were served, I utterly dropped my jaw, all the dishes look frigid plastic cold like you would see on the sample shelf in Japan. When I touched the lobster, shell is cold. Unbelievable! It was only apparent when I walked over to the kitchen. No heat, no wok sound, no speedy action, no smoke, which are essential to really GREAT cooking. It would probably take the 20-ish young cook another decade before he could master real cooking. Sorry.
I was so excited and rode from Kamala to Naka market for this but was utterly disappointed. For the price, you would better off buy 5-7 tiger prawns for 250 bahts (about a third of the price of lobster per kg) that could at least fill your stomach or last you around 5-7 days trying out all the food in Naka night market. Check out the kitchen and know what you are getting into before you sit down, unless you are just there for a beer, pizza, and loud music in Naka market.
And thanks to these reviews, all the tourists swamp TUMZ and left their neighbors swatting flies. I seriously doubt the neighbors taste any better. Perhaps it's true that Phuket is too touristy and better food is in...
Read moreWorst dining experience I had in Phuket.
We ordered a stir-fried morning glory, a steamed lime fish, and a pad Thai. We made it very clear that we wanted no spicy food at all, because I have a chili allergy. However, they brought us a very spicy fish, and when we politely asked them to take it back, they just rinsed off the chili and served us the same fish. It was still spicy, and the waitress did not even apologize.
On top of that, we had to wait too long for our pad Thai. We asked the waitress to check on it twice, but it only arrived after 45 minutes. I have never waited more than 15 minutes for a pad Thai in any other restaurant.
To make matters worse, they tried to overcharge us for a small beer. They told us it was 60 baht, but when we got the bill, they crossed out 60 and wrote 70 instead. That was totally unacceptable.
The only positive thing I can say is that the food was OK, but that did not make up for the terrible service and the dishonesty. I have no idea how this place got such a high score on...
Read moreFirst night roaming the streets of Phuket. Went to visit the night market on sunday and stumbled across this restaurant. Selection of fresh seafood available. I like the simple bbq shrimp for 1000 bht. We got got a small plate of morning glory, it was simple yet delicious. Only had one oyster left by the time we arrived. It's not the best i'v had. We also ordered squid, fried snapper with chili sauce and pad thai. Sauce overpowered the taste of squid, but it was fresh and hot with nice crunchy vegetables. Fish was tasty, hot, and juicy but not a lot of meat. I would have preferred the sauce on the side because it made the fish skin soggy. Best pad thai we've so far. Noodles were al dente and had a boast of flavors. A must try. Service was good, curtious, and quick. We paid a total of 1650 baht for the food and...
