Ankara Aspava Kızılay — Restaurant in Çankaya

The food was good and a lot but be careful! The whole concept of Aspava is to have unlimited appetisers included in the price of one dish. Well in this place i guess they are smart and find ways of scamming you like bringing not included appetisers with the included appetisers without informing you that they are not. When we made them notice it on the check they perfectly knew what to say “we asked and you said yes” (even though it was not our waiter so how could he know what we said) which means that it is what they do with each customer to get those 100 liras per person more. It’s not a lot of money but still I don’t like when people are not honest and I get scammed just because I am not a local. Also we ordered 2 bottles of water for each of us and they made us pay the price of a big bottle for a small one , again not a big deal but that’s not how things should be in a good a respectable restaurant. I had a meal at Aspava in Kızılay. The place is clean and has a pleasant atmosphere. I ordered the “PTT” menu, which includes 4 pieces of lavash-wrapped döner, salad, fries, çiğ köfte, ezme, tea, and two desserts. The taste was average, but the portions were generous. The price was 540 TL — not cheap, not expensive, just reasonable for what you get.

There were plenty of complimentary side dishes, and when I asked for an extra plate of fries, they brought it quickly, which was nice. However, the service could be better. The waiter gave off a bit of a “eat quickly and leave” vibe. Maybe it’s because I was dining alone, but a more welcoming and professional attitude would have improved the experience.

Even though the staff did not speak English, we could communicate with what little Turkish words I have learnt and the help of Google Translate. We ordered two mains and two drinks, but we ended up with a big feast. The starters literally filled our four seat table, and the manager was offering free refills while we were waiting for our mains. The serving size of the şiş kebap was huge, we got 5 kebaps for that one dish alone.

As we finished our mains, we were served two more courses of dessert and a pot of çay. This all ended up only costing us 1045TL which is around $30 USD at the time. This is the best value meal we have ever had!
