I recently visited Desi Spice Restaurant and decided to try their Punjabi Samosa. This review is specifically for the samosa, as I'll be trying other menu items later.
The Positives:
Authentic Punjabi Flavor: The filling had a genuine Punjabi taste that I enjoyed.
· Lovely Herb Touch: The use of carom seeds (ajwain/bishop's weed) in the dough was a delightful and authentic touch that I really appreciated.
· Freshness: It was clear that the samosas are prepared fresh, which is a big plus.
· Perfect Ambience: The restaurant's atmosphere is lovely and provides a great setting for a meal.
Areas for Improvement:
· The Dough (The Biggest Letdown): The outer shell was made entirely of maida (all-purpose flour). While it was okay, it felt a bit heavy. I believe the texture and health factor could be significantly improved by mixing in some whole wheat flour (atta). Furthermore, the dough wasn't as flaky or crispy as I'd hoped; it tasted a bit under-fried, perhaps due to being rushed during a busy period.
· Missing Key Flavors: The filling was good, but I distinctly missed the fresh, aromatic flavor of shredded coriander and the earthy note of cumin seeds (jeera). Their inclusion would have elevated the taste profile immensely.
· Underseasoned: The samosa was noticeably lacking in salt and pepper. A more generous seasoning would have greatly enhanced the existing flavors and made the samosa much more satisfying.
Overall Impression: I was initially happy with the samosa, but as I ate, I felt its potential was untapped. With a few tweaks to the dough, seasoning, and spice mix, this could easily be a 10/10 samosa.
For now, based on this experience, I'm giving the samosa a 6 out of 10. I'm hopeful to try their other dishes and will share another...
