My 4 best friends and I were reccomended to visit the Tippling House by our waiter in Revolution Du Cuba (his friend was apparently the bar manager) we were happy to do so. I had been there before and had enjoyed the specialised cocktails so knew that it was a decent venue.
It was a double celebration as not only was it my birthday night out, but a special one to celebrate one of us having been through the mill with cancer this year. A very significant event as it was her first time back out on the town since a mastectomy.
Having seated ourselves down on the long table and high chairs in the middle of the bar, and bought our first few rounds of drinks, a group of people arrived and sat next to us. Not a problem we thought! The atmosphere was pleasant and everyone seemed happy enough.
However some time later (I think after round 3) the bar tender came over to us and abruptly told advises us to move from where we were seated (quite happily and comfortably) to a different seating location because we were “disturbing” the customers next to us who, we were informed, were on a paid wine tasting session.
Perplexed at this particular interruption of our afternoon we couldn’t quite work out why their financial contributions were indeed being placed higher than our own. After all, we had already purchased several costly rounds. I can only assume that not only were these people on a wine tasting session, but perhaps were also there to review the bar itself?
After a few moments of debate amongst ourselves, we decided that we did not wish to stay for any more drinks after made to feel somewhat unwelcome. Which was a disappointment as the atmosphere in the bar was ideal for a group of longstanding friends to catch up after several months and some very tough times.
I was thoroughly disappointed that our afternoon looked set to end on a negative vibe like this, but we decided to move on to Cask. A super beer bar down on the green. The bar tender there had quite the opposite attitude to our presence and joined us momentarily to tell us about some of the fantastic and specialised alcohol which they serve. Thanks to that the afternoon ended on a good note.
I shan’t be going back to the Tipping Hat again, and I definitely won’t be reccomending it to anyone I know. I’m left disappointed with this as it’s alternative quirkiness was somewhere I had mistakenly assumed meant it was welcome to all. Unfortunately it seems, they prioritise...
Read moreI went in on a whim and was blown off my feet by what this lovely speakeasy had to offer. behind an inconspicuous door on Belmost street lies an underground bar that makes you forget that you're still on Belmont street. It seems like you don't look for this bar, it just finds you.
There are subtle indicators for good bars, like quality and range of liqueurs displayed, or house made syrups that you can identify to recognise that you're gonna have a good time, this bar had all of them. Most importantly however, is that their bartenders have an insane wealth of knowledge on alcohol and cocktails. Their menu of 10 or so drinks was definitely expertly crafted and the bartenders are very evidently enthusiasts.
10/10 on anything alcohol related, I asked for a Sazerac and the guy presented me a bottle of rye whisky from Sazerac, no faults here!
The atmosphere of the place was specifically crafted to be very relaxed and cosy, evidently the result of many years of a variety of customers enjoying a premium cocktail experience. The songs played had a very specific vibe that elevated the feeling of a familiar warmth, think MF DOOM. In terms of decor,... I want every single poster they have in my room.
10/10 for such a specifically well crafted atmosphere and...
Read moreA hit and miss visit this time. Booked online a table for January bottomless brunch back in November however when we arrived no table had been set up as they said it wasn’t clear if the booking was for drinks or brunch. The reminder email I received the morning of the booking stated lunch and as they had my email this could’ve easily been checked if in doubt. We were told to go to a dimly lit table next to the kitchen which was than set up. We both ordered the tempura langoustine mac and cheese, one was served in a small pie dish and the other on what looked like a side plate as we were advised they’d run out of the regular bowls or plates as a lot of people had ordered it. It consisted of one tempura langoustine and some rocket on top of cheesy pasta and that was it. No crunchy topping to it or anything through the pasta, bearing in mind there was a £2 or £3 supplement for the mac and cheese on top of the £35. The only good point of the visit was the regular top up of champagne without having to ask and our glasses were rarely empty. We had a gin each after the brunch had finished and the bill came to £92, we left feeling a little bit disappointed and also hungry. Would go back as love it for drinks / small plates but definitely not...
