The Aberdeen Maritime Museum is a hidden gem that brilliantly showcases the rich maritime history of the city and its pivotal role in the North Sea. From the moment you step inside the museum, you're greeted with an impressive blend of modern and historic architecture, seamlessly integrated to create an engaging and welcoming space. The building itself, with its glass-fronted facade and historic Provost Ross's House incorporated into the design, offers a unique visual appeal and sets the tone for a fascinating journey through maritime heritage.

The exhibits are wonderfully curated, covering a wide range of topics such as the history of shipbuilding, the fishing industry, and the oil and gas sector, which is central to Aberdeen's identity. The models of ships, historic artifacts, and interactive displays provide a deep dive into the lives of seafarers, engineers, and other maritime professionals. One of the standout features is the detailed presentation of the North Sea oil industry, which is both educational and engaging, offering insights into its engineering marvels and global significance.

The layout of the museum is excellent, making the visit smooth and enjoyable. Spread over multiple levels, the exhibits are arranged thoughtfully, allowing visitors to explore each section without feeling overwhelmed. The panoramic views of Aberdeen Harbour from the museum’s windows add an extra layer of immersion, making you feel connected to the city’s maritime legacy.

Whether you're a history enthusiast, an engineer, or simply someone looking to learn more about Aberdeen's past, the museum has something for everyone. The friendly and knowledgeable staff further enhance the experience, always ready to share insights or answer questions. Best of all, admission is free, making this an accessible and enriching experience for all ages.

The Aberdeen Maritime Museum is a must-visit destination that beautifully captures the spirit of the city and its enduring relationship with the sea. Highly...

A well put together and modern presentation of maritime and offshore exhibits. There is usually a boat sitting outside in the harbour to add to the experience!

The offshore exhibit is accurate, if you work offshore and your family wonders what its like then it would be a great place to take them even if you don't particularly want to see a survival suit again.

The staff were friendly, approachable and helpful.

Entry is free but you can donate at a box near the entrance.

If you find yourself in Aberdeen station and are tired of shopping at Union Square then it's a nice place to spend an hour or so.

There is an elevator (watch the step in and out) so it's navigable by pram and wheelchair but some there are a few steps in the main exhibit and on the older clipper exhibits so it may be a case of taking the long way around sometimes.

Bathrooms were clean and tidy.

The cafe on site is shut, probably due to COVID but you can bring food there to eat.

There isn't enough there to spend a whole day on but, due to its location, you can spend an hour or two there before moving on.

If you don't like heights be aware that the central part of the museum is dominated by a scale model of an oil platform that extends several storeys. It is surrounded by glass barriers and is obviously safe but maybe work your way from...

Visited the Aberdeen Maritime Museum on a quiet Monday afternoon and had a truly enjoyable experience. The receptionist was incredibly warm and welcoming, setting a positive tone for the visit. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, blending the city’s rich maritime heritage with fascinating displays that appeal to all ages. It’s a gem tucked in the heart of Aberdeen and a perfect way to spend a few reflective hours. Entry is free which is amazing for what you get, but I do encourage visitors to donate 💰 if they can to support the continued care and presentation of this beautiful museum. You may have to wait a tiny little queue if it’s a busy day, staff are always ready to help on each floor with a smile. They have pamphlets for non-English speakers, so no excuse for you not to go. It is accessible for all abilities as long as there is an assigned carer to assist throughout your visit. This is one of the places you want to bring children and young adults to see what history and beauty this place holds and preserves. Highly recommend! ✨✨ Titi ❤️

A beautiful and hypnotic museum dedicated to the long and mostly harmonious relationship between the city and the vast North Sea. I appreciate how largely uncommercial this museum is: there is no attempt to be controversial or flashy and spectacular in order to increase visitations. There is no override pageantry or blatant attempts to push a particular perspective. Instead, there is all of the complicated and comprehensive curiosity and thoughtfulness that should define the mission of a museum. I felt a profound sense of serenity being surrounded by the paintings of the ships of distant ages. As an environmentalist, I was initially a little worried about the prevalence of the oil and natural gas exhibits, but in reality, the exhibition is quite balanced, portraying the importance of the industry to the history of the city while also exposing its controversies over the decades. Great museum, and I hope that all those who are interested in the history of Aberdeen go here.
