My husband and I dined here for lunch for the first time after visiting Elsecar for the weekend. On being seated in a cosy dining room we eyed the menu up suspiciously as we was shocked by the large amount of vegan items on the menu, thinking there must have been a mistake. We cautiously ordered the vegsn fish and chips ( buy one get one for a pound). We couldnt believe it was in stock and available and ordered 2 meals. Our meals arrived promptly and accompanied by tartare sauce. Agsin sceptical I quietly checked with who I believe to be the landlord/ owner if the sauce was vegsn and he assured me they did a vegan sauce but still checked with the chef, to put my mind at rest that we was being served what we ordered. We then sat down to eat the most incredible meal EVER! The vegan fish was in a scrumptious crispy batter and the thick chunky chips were to die for, as was the sauce. What amazed us on the table was a vegan alternative of Worcestershire sauce, something we had never seen before. We commented on how lovely this was and what a surprise it was to find such a great alternative and the owner kindly offered for us to take the remainder of the bottle home. We was going to order dessert but was so full we had to decline. Two amazing vegan meals with two alcoholic drinks all for just over £20. Our only complaint we live over...
Read moreI'll start by saying I never write a review for anywhere but this was by far the worst Sunday dinner I have ever had.
Walked in and told the guys at the bar that we have booked a table to be met with blank expressions and to be told "well you can sit upstairs but it's a mess". After going upstairs we realised it was indeed a mess, tables and chairs everywhere and looked like it had not been cleaned in months and we were the only people there, Music was playing full blast... I honestly didn't know whether I was in a pub or a nightclub that has just closed. Not a menu in sight so had to go back down to get one and I ordered the roast ham. As I was walking back upstairs the guy is already following me up with the food which is a bad sign. Of course what I actually got was what appeared to be pork but was basically just a slab of fat with rock hard uncooked vegetables and roast potatoes that could smash a window they were that scorched. Almost broke my teeth on the stuffing.
Again, like I said I never write reviews but after spending £26 on 2 Sunday dinners that were simply inedible I just have to say something, I mean the place must have had 6 staff members just stood chatting at the bar but yet the place was as quoted "a mess". Was in and out in 15 minutes wont...
Read moreEnjoyed our Wednesday lunch having visited for the first time. Two areas had lovely fires burning in the grates and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. We liked the amount of effort which has obviously been put into the decor, something interesting to see in all directions. The staff were friendly and attentive. The general menu is interesting and varied with the addition of a "Specials of the day" menu. Drinks can be bought at the bar or ordered with food and brought to the table. We all enjoyed our main meals very much (Sea bream & baby clams Special, Steak Pie and Venison Burger & black pudding Special), the desserts were fine but a bit uninspiring. Two of us agreed that the Apple crumble from the Specials menu was rather bland with some of the apple undercooked but the Sticky toffee pudding was well received. (The only other options were Choc Brownie or Cheese board.) The toilets are clean and tidy. All in all a very nice experience but will probably skip desserts next time unless there's something a bit more...
