The Angel, Basingstoke (formerly Lloyds No.1), is the larger of two Wetherspoon's pubs in the town, being a new-build in the restaurant sector of Festival Place, opposite the Vue cinema. Handy for shoppers, it would seem to have everything in its favour for those wishing to partake of low-cost drinks and basic good-value pub food. The drinks range is wide with a good selection of (mostly) well-kept traditional draught beers and a larger selection of other beers, spirits and wines than any other Basingstoke hostelry.
The Angel is a one-bar outlet and is often very busy. Therein lies a problem: it is, by-and-large, not a pub to choose for a quiet drink - the ambient noise level can get quite high. For a bit of quiet relief, there are paved outside drinking areas, but the larger east-facing part is uncovered and in inclement weather is only a viable option for smokers or those who don't mind getting wet!
An on-going problem, in my opinion, is that the pub suffers from 'Unruly Child Syndrome' which is a feature of an increasing number of pubs nowadays and, sadly, Wetherspoon's is right up there at the top. It only takes one 'little angel' to cause mayhem and intense annoyance by tearing around the place, screaming at high volume, and bumping into customers and staff who may be carrying drinks or food. Wetherspoon's should enforce a policy that children should be under parental control at all times. Too many parents treat the pub as a crèche allowing their offspring to behave in a way they probably would not tolerate were...
Read moreWell I can understand why this is rated as Hampshire's worst Wetherspoons! I ordered a bowl of chips and onion rings. A simple order. More people came in and were being served meals and everything and I still waited. 50%+ of the menu was unavailable! The staff were bringing one plate out at a time (plates were tiny) and the couple next to us got their food about 20 minutes apart from each other. I've never been let down by Wetherspoons until now. Yes it was a little busy but Guildford and Aldershot have been busier and we've still been served quicker! As we waited more and more things were becoming unavailable with staff sticking signs on the wall saying what was unavailable. If only Google maps let you put minus stars!! There's many more restaurants in the area that The food was an interesting mix upon it's arrival. Onion rings burnt, yet they were cold. The chips were very good however
About 5 mins before it arrived I politely enquired to a worker. These were my exact words. "Hi there, I understand your busy but other tables who ordered after us have been served, is there any way you can check on ours please" She gave the dirtiest look and went "not my issue is it" before walking back into the kitchen. This is ridiculous and pathetic. Your staff are representing the brand and yet this is how they...
Read moreI work in the hospitality industry so I totally understand 100% of what you go though on a daily basis . I have never in my life been so determined to leave a comment as. I do today . I went to this establishment for a couple of drinks to celebrate my 50th birthday with my husband . We had a couple of rounds of drinks with a couple of rounds of shots . Just having a bit of fun . I was the refused service at the bar ,not because they thought I was drunk but because of the amount of shots I had drunk . I wasn’t falling off my chair , abusive or causing any sort of a seen . And by all accounts when I questioned it at the bar the second bar staff member seemed happy to serve me . I asked to speak to a manager as I was totally appalled by their treatment of me , and I am writing this message after more drinks in a bar close by . I am a fifty year old woman not a child having a few drinks with her husband and felt like I was treated like some sort of alcoholic . Not cool and I will definitely not be going back there . No people skills and no management skills . A...
