Came here last night for my 18th birthday... And wow what a surprise it was! From the lovely decor, to the amazing lamb chops... The balti dishes were also really nice! The place had ambience... From the dim lighting to the quiet music and the smell of grilled food filling the air, it really was a lovely spot to be! This place has the things you'd expect from a restaurant, such as toilet facilities, open tables as well as booths, good table service, a bar selling a range of liqueurs and soft drinks... So in terms of facilities, you can tick that box! Now be sure to pop round here one evening and have a good time! Akbar’s Brum We phoned up to see if we’d need to make a booking but were told we could just turn up. It’s easily located but just beware the car park is a one way system so don’t go down the wrong way like we did! There’s ample parking, or at least there was the time we visited. We visited around 7pm and it was quite busy so we had a short wait until taken to our table. The waiting area is quite vast and comfortable. The whole ambience in the restaurant is appropriate. There were 6 in our party and there were two tables put together with 6 chairs although where it was positioned meant it was a tight squeeze for us. The location, the entrance and waiting area and kitchen serving area have an upmarket feel whereas the seating and the menu itself (a laminated sheet) don’t follow through with this theme so don’t worry about how you’re dressed! As mentioned, the place was busy and the waiter for our area was sufficiently attentive. The timings and wait for food was perfectly acceptable and all food was served hot. For starters we had poppadoms, masala fish at £4.95 (highly recommended!), keema/cheese samosas at £3.50 (2 in a portion- tasted okay but not worth the £3.50) & chicken wings at £4.25 (5 small middle portions- again, tasted okay, but not worth the £4.25). The sauces came just as we were finishing our starters which was a bit disappointing. For mains, we had the biryani (meat) with the keema sauce at £8.95 (the option was that or raita), a chicken tikka makhani at £9.95, a karahi gosht £9.95, a chicken jalfrezi £8.95, a family plain naan £4.50 and a family garlic naan (ordered after the first was finished) at £4.95. Everything was of a good size portion wise. The meat biryani was confusing by definition on the menu and what we got was a a meat biryani (pulao style) with an accompanying watered down keema (mince) curry with some big pieces of potato served in a small round plastic container served alongside some salad. The meat biryani was flavoursome but not spicy and my 4 year old was devouring it! All of the mains were flavoursome and the right level of heat (we asked for medium) although we all seemed to prefer the karahi ghosht over the chicken jalfrezi. We ate to the point we couldn’t eat anymore and there was plenty to take home. They served us containers and a bag so we could pack our own food. They were a bit slow to serve the bill but this came with lollies - only 5 for a party of 6 though! Overall it was a pleasant experience and I would definitely recommend it and we will be going back.

Akbars Birmingham: A Culinary Disappointment My recent dining experience at Akbars Birmingham left me feeling thoroughly disappointed. The restaurant, renowned for its delectable Pakistani cuisine, failed to deliver on its promise of flavorful and authentic dishes. I had high hopes for my meal, particularly for the lamb shank, a signature dish that had garnered rave reviews. However, upon its arrival, I was immediately struck by its lackluster appearance. The meat, which should have been fall-off-the-bone tender, was surprisingly tough and bland, devoid of the rich, aromatic spices that are the hallmark of Pakistani cuisine. As I delved into the dish, my initial misgivings were confirmed. The gravy, while generously portioned, was woefully underseasoned, offering little in the way of flavor enhancement. The accompanying vegetables, while cooked to a perfect al dente texture, were similarly devoid of seasoning, adding further to the dish's overall blandness. The disappointing lamb shank was not the only element of my meal that fell short of expectations. The naan bread, typically a fluffy, flavorful accompaniment to any Pakistani meal, was dry and chewy, offering little in the way of textural contrast or flavor. The rice, too, was unremarkable, cooked to a mushy consistency and lacking any discernible seasoning. In addition to the culinary shortcomings, the service at Akbars Birmingham was equally underwhelming. Our waiter, while polite, seemed inattentive and rushed, often disappearing for extended periods without providing updates on our order or offering drink refills. Overall, my dining experience at Akbars Birmingham was far from what I had anticipated. The bland food, coupled with the lackluster service, left me feeling disappointed and unsatisfied. With so many other excellent Pakistani restaurants in Birmingham, I would be hard-pressed to recommend Akbars to anyone seeking a truly authentic and flavorful Pakistani dining experience.

We went as a family of 7...this included 3 children and a 1 year old. We turned up expecting a bit of a que as its 50% off but the que didnt look to bad. We waited for around 45 mins before somebody came and said it would be another half an hour before we would get a table. After waiting so long we decided to wait it out. We waited for over 2 and half hours before we got a table! Once we did get inside, there was no ac, fans or windows....it literally felt like a sauna....and the amount of people that were in the restaurant was crazy..... i had a crying 1yr old who was hungry and 3 sweaty kids who had just had enough. We got to ordering.... firstly we ordered mojito drinks... ... they were basically orange j20's in a glass with a tiny bit of ice..we also had mango lassi jug which was fine. for our starters we ordered samosa chaat, chicken pakoras, chicken tikka and a couple of others.... the portions were tiny and the chicken was dry. We asked a wiater about ac or a window but were told due to covid they couldnt put them on.... it was like a sauna. You could not breathe! We were told that staff and customers had complained but nothing had been done by managment. They had lights shining on us (spotlight type) and the heat coming from just the bulbs were really bad to the point my husband got up and turned them around. By this time i had just had enough and wanted to go home. We then received our mains... lamb paneer. King prawn balti. Lamb karahi and chicken balti..... the taste was not how i remembered it from a couple of years back. The lamb and chicken tasted the same.... and there were hardley any prawns in the king prawn balti. The food wasnt even garnished. We packed the food and went home....we will not be going back again.

Have to mention it at the beginning that I'm not a big fan of Indian food, so my comments could be very biased. It was a group dinner for me, I didn't vote for the venue. Akbar is a famous Indian restaurant that can be found in many cities across the UK. After walking in, the internal environment looked gorgeous and beautiful. The service was really nice and kind. But for me, the core of a restaurant is always about the food. Unfortunately, Akbar was a huge disappointment in that part. Firstly I got a Starter Platter, the chops and the chicken wings looked delicious. After some quick bites, I suddenly felt nervous. I could taste something like charcoal, the outer part of both the chops and the chicken wings was burnt. Apart from that, the chops were too spicy and too salty for me. Not a very nice start, next mains. All of the Indian mains looked the same before I actually asked to know that there were 4 different dishes! They might be very authentic, but I'm sorry they didn't move me at all. Wait, I might be partially wrong. Because my stomach was moved actually, in an unpleasant way an hour after finishing my dinner! Well I heard that it was pretty common for people that were unused to Indian food, so not a big issue. The Mango Cheesecake served at the end was good, well not an Indian dessert anyway. Overall the food quality was below par, I gave 3 stars because of the environment and the service. As a side note, the takeaway bags they gave us were leaky. That caused some coloured juicy liquid of those authentic Indian dishes to come out, definitely something I really wanted to forget as quickly as possible. Will I come back If I have my right to vote for the next venue? Probably not.

An honest punjabi foodie review! We visited the one in Bradford. Then tried this one in Birmingham. It was the worst experience food wise. We ordered seekh kebabs, chapli kebabs, mutton karahi and their signature family naan. Firstly service and ambiance was excellent. Waiter asked about the spice levels and we (three of us) went for medium. First came the chicken seekh kebabs which were loaded with chillies. Although our spice level is quite high. Still we were not able to taste kebabs except chillies. Then came chappal kebabs. For goodness sake, do you guys know what are chappal kebabs? These were ordinary mince kebabs. You needed to know what is authentic taste. I don't understand the hype of Akbars. The chicken karahi was just ok. That had very small pieces of meat again with lots of chillies. Seemed like a chicken curry. Again not authentic karahi flavour. Seemed like general ready made sauces were used with tarhka. If a karahi is made. It should be made from scratch. We were really disappointed. So much so that when waiter asked should he pack the leftover food. We all in one voice said NO.
