Th’owd Tithe Barn is a gastropub that sits along the river Wyre in Garstang and has been a part of Garstang’s culinary industry for quite a few years now. The pub itself has it’s own car park and a very picturesque beer garden looking out onto the river – very relaxing on a warm spring day! Inside the pub is very traditional looking with a small bar, flagstone floors and a large fireplace, it definitely has a very cosy atmosphere! I would definitely recommend going if you want to enjoy some drinks on a hot day! The menu itself is very limited in terms of vegetarian food, which I can understand as it is primarily a pub, however with the amount of good food coming out of Garstang it was disappointing to see only 3 mains that were suitable for vegetarians – vegetarian lasagne, cheese and potato pie and a vegetarian burger. For starters we chose breaded brie and garlic bread, and for mains I chose the lasagne whilst my partner chose scampi. Though there weren’t many dining guests, it took quite a while for the food to come and I did notice other tables that had arrived later than us getting their food before us. The starters were nice and simple, however both of us didn’t like the mains. The vegetarian lasagne consisted of pasta, cheese and not very much else, I had spied a couple of slices of mushroom however the overall texture was slimy. The scampi was under seasoned and only just cooked, with my partner saying that the only reason he knew he was eating the scampi rather than the chips that were served with it was because he could see it. The starters, mains and two non-alcoholic drinks came to just over £30. As you can tell, our overall impression of the food was awful which was disappointing as we have both had very good reviews of the place in the past. At the time of visiting (about two weeks ago) there were listings for waiting and kitchen staff, therefore I wondered whether that was why we were served such poor quality meals. I will try this place again, but I wont be rushing...
Read moreUnfortunatley this place is a lovely venue but that is as far as it goes.....visited today for evening meal in the sun by the canal........ Menu reads brilliant......good choices....good prices basic pub grub with nice twists.....being in the trade i was little worried after i arrived...but... Menu on modern clipboard restored my faith slightly..... as i watched.....food already ordered came outside to find its owners but then turned back in to pub....customer run after the waitress to claim it..... She then tried to blame the customer for moving tables.....they had not....sauces were sachets....salt and pepper were sachets.....again....giving benefit of doubt as they were eating outside.....how wrong i was.....we choose a table inside.... ordered a sharing hunters platter meal between 2 £15.95 portion of chips and a steak and ale pie.....around a tenner....the pastry was uncooked and soggy....there was plenty of steak....a few chunky chips and dish of veg seperate that really should not have left the kitchen....only edible veg in it was a few carrots.....the green beans were shrivelled one soggy wedge of sweet potato and we guessed that the horrible looking dark things maybe cabbage.....the sharing platter did indeed come with all listed componants but they gave us 2 little slices of bread....1 each!! We had to ask for butter....in a sachet..... and not even 2 pieces of the meats each.....had to cut in half to each taste.....as the waitress did not come back to check on us.... And they were not busy.... we left the shrivelled veg and mouldy grapes on our plates....headed for the bar....not to make a scene we left the payer to complain....it was a young girl....who had only just come on as we hadnt see her....she did try to give complimentry coffee and a drink but rest of of the party were already on the carpark....we paid full.....we also think that it would have been a waste of time telling the older ladies as they obviously had no idea because they actually served us that...
Read moreSeems to have been going steadily downhill for the past few years. We've been going there quite often for over 5 years, but have noticed a consistent decline in the food -- quality getting worse, quantity getting less, prices (always) increasing !
Visited again today (10.03.25) hoping to have a decent meal. Nice sunny day - we thought that a drink / meal by the Marina might be nice - hoping their standards had improved. Sadly we were disappointed (again).
Arrived at 14.30, got drinks & asked if they were doing food - was told by the bar lady - "last food orders at 8pm" - so decided to relax in the sun for a while. Went back in to order food at just after 3pm & was told by the manager / owner ? - that the kitchen was shut from 3pm for an hour or more, as they only had one chef on in early weekdays - WHY weren't we told this when I asked about food at 14.30 !!
NOT HELPFUL -- I have a medical condition (not an unusual one ) that requires that I eat at regular intervals -- if they'd told me that the kitchen would be shut for the time I was there we would have either ordered immediately - or gone elsewhere.
The owners / management need to "get a grip" - otherwise they're going to harm / destroy a great pub, in a lovely location --- a suggestion - start using locally sourced meat / veg products (not cheap frozen, reheated) - & get a GOOD Chef ! This pub could be "right up there" for location, ambience, food & atmosphere -- don't mess up anymore -- great food at a DECENT price will always get you repeat visits -- unlike us - who are wondering if we'll bother...
