Visited on a one night stop at the Premier Inn across the way. I had fish and chips which other reviewers have raved about and my wife had the lasagne. Owners and bar staff were all attentive and very pleasant throughout.
They do two sizes of some dishes (the lasagne included). My wife plumped for the smaller portion after seeing the large at the next table. Still a reasonable size if you're not very hungry. The large would be large by anyone's standard.
Her lasagne was very tasty - it was not dissimilar to what we might cook at home, but certainly not the bland bowls you find in some places.
My fish and chips was a bit disappointing truth be told - batter was thicker than ideal and fish a little overdone. Maybe my expectations were set too high as it was no worse than fish and chips I had another pub that week. Please read on however as I wouldn't want this to put you off visiting.
The place has been redecorated and we felt it could do with a few touches to warm it up (it's a mainly white colour scheme in the dining area with bright cool white LEDs - changig to warm whites would help a lot), but this is minor stuff.
The overall atmosphere was still good as the locals were friendly and the owners are clearly making a huge effort to do a good job. We would still have no hesitation returning next time we're passing through and...
Read moreRang over a week in advance of us visiting to ask were they showing the football and was told they was, so we booked a table for Saturday night just gone, the pub is nice not very many staff only seen 1 on the bar and 1 waitress, it did take over 1 hr for a food to arrive even though the pub was practically empty, food was OK, I asked the staff could they put on the football as that was the only reason we choose to eat there I was told yes I will do it for you now, 15 minutes later a group of youths came in and had this terrible music playing on the juke box, mean while we're still waiting in the TV to channel to be changed and after 20 minutes we gave up and left, we went over to the pub across the road which had a much more welcoming vibe and they had the match playing, I don't think we will be coming here again it is quite poorly run and was more of a youth club than a pub/restaurant, plus half the menu was not available as apparently they had run out ? And we was never even offered a dessert menu so not even sure if they...
Read moreAs a boater I used to come to The White Bull regularly, the old owners were always very friendly and welcoming.
Since the new owners have arrived they have continued to block access to canal boaters facilities which is adjacent to the pub. This land and building are owned by the Canal River Trust.
Access to these facilities is vital for boaters but the pub have blocked access to the alleyway and tap and are rude and obstructive when boaters want to access it.
This land and building do not belong to the White Bull, they have no right to block it nor be rude to boaters needing to use it. Many boaters live completely off grid, if we cannot access fresh water or the bin store this effects us badly.
A complaint has been submitted to Canal River Trust.
It's also a crying shame that what was a very nice pub to moor beside and enjoy some food or a pint has become somewhere...
