Mick's Fish & Chips — Restaurant in Braintree

The fish and chips was 5* but the customer service was only 2* so combined I give it 4*

I did what you’re doing now and googled “fish and chips in braintree”. Plenty to chose from but the amount of reviews as well as the rating here won me over.

I walked in and ordered, I kept being looked at by the staff as I stood at the counter but nobody said “be with you in 2 or bare with me while I complete this order”.

While I was waiting the staff gave two separate customers wrong items in their order which they were honest enough to bring to the employees attention. My order was small, just for 2 people but I had a long wait for my food to be ready. Maybe this is normal on a weekday evening???

Once my order was given to me I couldn’t see one of the items I paid for. When I asked the female employee I got a blunt and sharp response, so much so it took me by surprise!

The food itself I couldn’t fault at all.. portion sizes were good, it wasn’t greasy and it tasted fantastic!

I hope the poor service was just a “one off” and not a regular thing. Will probably try another fish and chip shop in...

I visited here yesterday, the first time since lockdown and I'm sad to say it has gone downhill. Not one member of staff was wearing their face covering correctly (all under their chins). The female member of staff did not have a hair net on and was stood by the till putting her hair in a ponytail which is unhygienic. The manager was saying how we are going into tier 2 but was allowing customers to walk in without face coverings. When customers paid in cash gloves were not worn and hands not washed/sanitised. When my food was ready and I left, I said my usual 'thankyou, goodbye' but staff were too busy chatting together to say goodbye. When I got home the sausages were cold and had a funny taste. Overall the experience wasn't a great one and for me the incorrect wearing of masks and non existent hand washing during a pandemic is enough to make me not want to go back...

I visited here on 7th of October and was disappointed with the hygiene of the food service. I ordered and waited while it was being prepared. I first noticed the older gentleman bringing the chicken portions out in a cardboard box and placing them into the heated food display cabinet using his bare hands and was not best pleased. While my order was being done the server who had just served another customer and taken cash then went to the heated display cabinet and took my pie out using her hands which had not been washed or sanitised. I said as much and was given another pie which was also handled in the same way. I collected my order and went. I did not eat my pie when I got home. I did note that none of the staff were wearing masks. I have given 3 stars because the food has always been very good. We are in trying times so a bit more emphasis on hygiene...
