Thai Cottage Restaurant — Restaurant in Braintree

I have been eating here on and off for quite some time but with the situation that happened last week - sadly will not be returning.

I placed a medium to large order over the phone - nothing crazy, circa £80 or so.

My wife double checked all items over the phone whilst I was on load speaker.

I then went to collect it and when I got to the restaurant , I asked the lady if she was sure all the items were there and she said yes.

Got home to notice once main dish was missing. My wife rang them up and advised it was missing and they acknowledged it was left out, I heard them on loudspeaker and said can you kindly deliver it as I have family and kids around. To which they stated they do not deliver. I said ok, if I’m coming back then I’m not paying for their mistake and it’s only right they do not charge me for the dish. They just replied with a series of - “ok’s”

So , I then drove back up to the restaurant and advised the lady at the front desk I’m here to collect the dish that was missing, she signalled the guy in the kitchen and waited a few mins …

I then advised her to refund the dish amount back onto my card while I was waiting - she nodded and said ok and punch the relevant numbers into the card machine and took my card.

After processing she returned the card back to me - when I saw the pdq receipt , I saw to my shock that it wasn’t a refund but a charge!

I asked her - why did you charge me instead of refunding me?? She replied saying no refunds!! ??

I mean - excuse me! I made it perfectly clear over the phone what my expectation was, I then advised the same when I returned to the restaurant only to be charged again! What an insult.

The lady then got the guy from the kitchen who came out and apologised and gave me cash from the register for the transaction the last processed. I said to him that fine but you need to refund me twice the amount as firstly for what the lady just charged me and secondly the original amount for the dish - he then said he can’t and advised I could have a bag of prawn crackers!

This is an absolute joke! I told him , this experience has left the most sour taste in all the restaurants I’ve been to in Witham and still no response from them.

My husband and I went to this place on new years eve 2018 for dinner. All our food tasted delicious and fresh compared to the Thai cafes around Essex. The staff are friendly and happy during service and this feels welcoming! I come from a hospitality background and its important for a waiter/waitress to ask how food is before the client finishes it such that if they dont like it something else can be made. The food here is excellent, good size portions, well seasoned with very good heat and flavour to the Som Tam Salad & the Beef Massamann. And the Chicken Pad Thai was absolutely spot on with lots of flavour and tender freshly cooked chicken. They actually had Chang beer as well which I've struggled to find at my local Thai restaurants. The guy serving was really friendly and welcoming. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone. We are not locals, just passing through otherwise we would definitely get food from here...
