Living in Birmingham for many years Iâve been meaning to go to this place, essentially at the gateway to the Lickey Hills Country Park, for a long time but what with one thing and another had never got around to it. But last Monday, the day before New Yearâs Eve, weâd been to the park in the morning, felt like lunch out rather than at home, and this seemed like the ideal opportunity. We arrived at 1pm, and considering it was lunchtime it was quite quiet â good, we thought, since that should have meant a minimal wait. My order was for a medium sirloin steak, with the rest of us ordering hunterâs chicken and fish bites and chips. Time passed. And passed. The pub started filling up, and time continued to pass. 45 minutes after placing our order I decided to go to the bar to see where our food was â not least because weâd almost finished our drinks. The barmaid went into the kitchen, and then came out with our food and took it to the table; after placing it down I asked if we might have some complementary drinks to eat with our food, since weâd just about (after getting through them as slowly as we could) finished the ones weâd bought on ordering. She said sheâd have to speak to her manager, and went; whilst she said she was sorry for the wait, I didnât get much of a sense of genuine regret from it, more that she knows that what youâre supposed to do in that situation is say sorry for the wait. It was then when I started eating my food that I gained an insight into perhaps why it had taken 45 minutes to cook, for my âmediumâ steak was very much beyond medium, it was indeed far beyond what the steak levels of doneness meme has as âorder the chicken you steak-hating b-yardâ. Itâs also a good job there was a proper steak knife because it was so tough to cut â and to chew â that I might have needed a power saw to cut it. I believe there were some mushrooms, though the brown spheres on the plate which I suspected of being mushrooms could have been more or less anything. And the chips had something of a background taste and odour of barbecue sauce about them, which was especially annoying because I really donât like barbecue sauce. Fortunately for my co-diners their food they declared as being yeahwaâevs average. All the while I was getting my jaw exercise eating the steak I was thinking another glass of wine might have made it easier to go down; eventually after 20 minutes just as we were finishing our food those free drinks to make up for the 45 minute wait I asked for eventually arrived, which on the one hand, at least they eventually arrived, but on the other hand it did mean we ended up staying longer still than expected to drink them. When I was standing at the bar asking where my food was, the two people stood behind me said âoh dear, that doesnât bode well, weâve only just arrivedâ; as we were leaving I went over to their table and said âpro tip, if youâre going to ask for a free drink ask for it at half an hour if you want to stand a chance of it coming whilst youâve still got food to eatâ. âOh dear, it looks like weâve been waiting 35 minutesâ, they replied, just as their...
Read moreMy dad is retiring next week so we thought we would go out for a meal to celebrate. We have been here a few times and had good experiences. We booked up a fortnight ago incase of it being busy. We arrived today and they had no reference of us booking up. They managed to squeeze us in apparently. We also booked for a highchair and when we told them they said there isn't one available at the moment but when there is they would get one to us. My brother had a walk around the restaurant and found two highchairs hidden so he grabbed one of those. We ordered food and they said it was a 40 minute wait for food which is understandable. It took roughly an hour and half for food to arrive. There was one person taking orders for drinks which took about 15 minutes to be ordered and numerous people walked out. You could tell they was extremely under staffed and the poor manager was running around doing everything he could, so hats off to him. When food did arrive it was very lovely. After we had food I asked someone if there was a long wait for desserts and the gentleman came back and said no shouldn't take long. So we decided to order some. They took roughly half hour to arrive. We booked the table for 2pm and we didn't leave the restaurant till after 5pm. If it wasn't my dads retirement meal we would of just left and asked for a refund but didn't want the hassle. We would definitely not return after this...
Read moreThis is a better than average, local cheap as chips pub chain type establishment so as long as you go in with that expectation you will be happy. The staff are always happy, helpful and friendly and offer brilliant service. We had particularly great service from Stacey & Alisha this evening Theres a good range of food on the menu and its all pretty tasty with decent portions. Its your basic pib food type offerings but theres plenty to choose from and a few more interesting bits too. Food comes out relatively quickly and all was piping hot and well cooked. If you have a pooch at home they are a dog friendly place with a doggy station for blankets, water bowls and treats however for those who dont want to eat around a 4 legged friend the dog friendly seating area is sufficiently seperate from the main restaurant area. Tables and seats are comfy and well spaced out so it doesnt feel cramped
Overall its a great place to have on our doorstep and a favourite of ours when we want to pop out for a quick and easy dinner that we know we will enjoy but won't cost the earth
Can reccommend: The ultimate burgers, mac and cheese bowls, chicken kebab and the thai veg curry. All some...
