Small, friendly & attentive.
We came for the steak night where you can choose from an 8oz sirloin or pay a small supplement for Filet. You can also have beer battered fish & chips We both chose the sirloin cooked rare with a side of beer battered onion rings & a Stilton sauce. We started with slow cooked ābelly pork bitesā, which were accompanied with rocket leaves & a spicy garlic sauce.
The belly pork was lovely, quite highly flavoured; & just enough to get the juices flowing for the main course.
We both ordered our steaks rare and it was actually cooked perfectly - I mention this because cooking steaks seems to be a lost or dark art for some restaurants (especially a well known steak restaurant chain who think a lettuce wedge is somehow an attractionā¦). After making an enquiry, Iām told two ladies - Vicky & Becky are the chefs here. Wow, what an asset..! To the owners - Keep hold of those two whatever..!
The quality & flavour of the steak at the Royal Oak was fantastic and you would normally pay twice the price for this quality elsewhere. I cannot emphasise enough that this was a seriously good piece of sirloin, cooked to perfection. Couple that with some oven roast tomatoes, crushed peas & a proper big blokes portion of chunky fried chips, & we were both left totally stuffed..!
The sides were great too - proper onion rings - enough for two & a good helping of Stilton sauce - that actually tasted of Stilton..! No packeted rubbish here!
Finally, the service was fantastic; our waitress Maisie was very cheerful, attentive without being overbearing & when we ordered extra drinks they arrived very quickly without any fuss. Of note, all of the staff looked happy to be there, which I think really shines through in the service you receive. We will definitely...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreNo vegan options on the menu. Was a bit disappointed by the whole experience as Iād heard good things about the food, but unfortunately they donāt cater very well to vegans/vegetarians. There were no markings on the menu to identify which meals contained allergens or were vegan/vegetarian. I asked if the cauliflower curry was vegan and the waitress was unsure. I asked about a few other menu items which she also couldnāt confirm. After checking with the kitchen she informed me that they could do me tandoori vegetable kebabs. Wasnāt exactly what I wanted as the menu contained burgers and pies which sounded nice and could have easily been made vegan, however I didnāt want to walk out and make my friends move to another restaurant so I agreed to the kebabs. The meal itself was pretty disappointing. Just seasoned vegetables, rice and a bowl of salad without any dressing. It would have been nice to have some sort of protein in the meal such as seitan or tofu or maybe a sauce to make it a little less dry. When the bill came I saw I had been charged Ā£13.50 for the meal, which I felt was a bit much considering I had no choice and that the meal itself didnāt live up to the standard I would expect. They agreed to charge me half price so I paid just over Ā£10, diet coke included. The restaurant is nice and the service was decent, however regarding allergies and dietary requirements the staff seemed a little ill-informed and unprepared so I hope they can have some better food options in the future or at least be a bit more adaptable with their menu. My friends both enjoyed their meals so it was a real let down that...
