We had the misfortune of eating at Benets just before the New Year. We had travelled to Cambridge with my family who were visiting from abroad. When we arrived at Benets we were greeted by tables that had not been cleared and we were forced to remove the dirty dishes ourselves in order to make space as my parents (both retired) were cold and they were both keen to stop and have something hot to eat and drink.
We placed our order at 3:16pm (we know that from the till receipt) however, our order was not completed until 3:42pm which would not have been a problem in itself if we then had not been asked to finish up and leave at 3:50pm because Benets was due to close at 4pm! Bearing in mind we had paid to eat on the premises (rather than ordering food to takeaway) and the fact that we had spent just over £56 on overpriced and mediocre food you will understand why we were more than a little upset when our repeated requests to allow my family to finish our food and at least stay until 4pm were ignored. (It would have been obvious to the staff that we could not finish our food in the eight minutes they sought to allow because our order included piping hot soup which tasted as if it had been allowed to over boil or had been microwaved for too long). What really topped off what was an already disappointing experience was having the misfortune to have to deal with the gentleman who I believe was in charge. He all but laughed at my wife when she complained and gave an excellent impression of someone who really didn't give a stuff because he knew we were 'passing trade'; we had already spent our money (you pay for your food before your order is brought to you); and he was unlikely to see us again! We have never come across anyone quite so rude. It was abundantly clear that the staff member concerned had no interest whatsoever in whether our experience of Benets was a good one and as a result he helped to spoil what had otherwise been a really lovely day.
In summary I would never eat at Benets again nor would I recommend it to anyone. The food is overpriced for what it is and the staff show very little or no regard for...

Read moreI have been way reading some reviews about its unfriendliness toward book readers/locals and prefers to prey on tourists. Well indeed.
The only thing that entices me is the “homemade gelato”. Unfortunately it’s nothing special. Thickness is alright, but lacks flavor and on the sweet side. Maybe im not lucky today the selection is also less interesting. The staff refuses my request for half and half scoops in a rather rude way and didn’t offer me to taste before picking. I took his recommendation of toffee and pecan over peanuts but sadly there is no pecan in my scoop— what an art. On a positive note, toffee and my fiend’s chocolate tasted better together.
Mystery solved. Now I can confidently confirm that there’s nothing for me here. I have my other favorite places for gelato with better tastes...
