Pub in the Centre of Cambridge that is owned by the Greene King group. Ales were excellent - I had a pint of Landlord and my wife had a Greene King IPA. We had rather a problem with our Steak & Ale pie because it didn't contain any actual steak!! So I was left wondering "where's the beef?" We returned it and the staff were very good about it even going so far as to refund me the entirety of my order. I hadn't asked them to do that so they went above and beyond in that sense. But the excuses for the steak and ale pie not containing any steak was "we buy it in from outside, we don't make it in-house". Huh? That sat oddly with both me and my wife because surely if you are in charge of serving up food (£13.75 for the steak and ale pie) then you have some quality control which checks whether the food is, you know, any good? Either way it didn't seem much of an excuse! Also the chips were first served lukewarm and definitely not fresh. They were replaced swiftly enough. Walking into this pub we wanted a simple small pub lunch but walking out with nothing in our stomachs we were wondering if Greene King breweries spend much time on quality control of the food they are buying in to their pubs?
We were then told to go next door to Bread & meat which we then did and had an outstanding lunch. We ordered the Philly Cheeseteak. Which contained masses of lovely succulent tasty shredded beef topped off by yummy melted Cheese. I suppose it's the difference between making something with love in a place that is your dream versus big chain mass production which is most certainly not made with love. And not only not made with love but not even made in-house!
Thanks for refunding me my money. I'd have preferred a real lunch with real steak in a real Steak...
Read moreWanted to give 2.5 stars in reality. After negotiating the lengthy track and trace before entering the door, we ordered a starter to share from the sharer menu, then a main course. The starter was massive and enough for 4 people, but tasty, however the mains turned up halfway through our starters.
The burger with salt beef in a brioche bun was large with chips, coleslaw and onion rings served on a rather small plate. Picking up the burger, all this watery liquid came out rendering the bread useless. Due to the size of the plate it was impossible to separate easily. The burger was unseasoned and fatty tasting. Safe to say it was not finished.
The chicken and chips with bread, butter and mushy peas. Butter was frozen and took a time to get useable butter. The chicken was ok but dry. mushy peas were scarce.
I’m sad to say that I would have eaten better in MacDonald’s!! 😋 For a fraction of the cost.
Really disappointing for a Greene King local pub in East Anglia.
Some parts of woodwork and furniture were dusty (Covid-19 😷) 😱😱
£35 for a half eaten lunch because of the cooking and quality Really!!!
I await the general short...
Read moreAwful place, avoid. Served mouldy bread to us twice.
We popped in here for lunch on a busy Saturday afternoon (when it's hard to find a table anywhere). One of us ordered the "our favourites" platter. A member of staff popped by to ask if everything was ok, and he complained that the bread buns for the sliders was very dry. She brought back some more buns from the kitchen.
The second lot of buns had mould in them. Actual mould. And then we realised that the first lot had some specks missing from the top, almost as though someone had picked out the mould. He complained and got a refund and we left asap.
Greene King need to take items off the menu if they don't have the fresh produce to serve them. The quality of the kitchen at a Greene King is never going to be anything better than low end pub food (mostly cooked from frozen) but serving something mouldy is just horrific. And it's not like it's cheap. GK have so many pubs in tourist areas, and we wonder why the UK has a terrible reputation for food.
If they do this to their food, where else is the management...
