I absolutely adored this place! I stayed here for two nights because, unlike other options in Cambridge burdened with ridiculous service charges, this place not only serves incredible food but is also completely free from such charges! I tried a variety of drinks, including Guinness, Estrella, and the DNA beer – all of them were fantastic. On my first night, I ordered the fish and chips, which were remarkably tasty and wonderfully crispy! It surpassed my experiences at other Greene King establishments. I also tried the steak and ale pie, and while the pie itself was delightful, I found the mash and cabbage a bit on the dry side. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, with one small exception. The woman, who I believe was the manager and had dark hair in a ponytail, seemed to need a bit more training. Unlike the other staff members who were fine with me moving the table, she had an issue with it and "assisted" me in moving it back. She claimed it was because it was near the fire escape, but no one else seemed to have a problem, so maybe it's best to let your customers handle it themselves, right? I'll definitely be coming back for more, especially since there are no service charges here!

The Eagle is a far above-average Greene King establishment that's been around for a long time (not always as GK though). It offers a substantial selection of cask ales, especially at the separated beer bar area in the back. So if Abbot Ale (runner-up at the Championship Beer of Britain 2023, to the astonishment of everybody and the dismay of many) doesn't float your boat, there's plenty of stuff from other brewers (like Oakham Ales) to choose from. I wish other GK pubs followed this example. Housed in a beautiful Grade II-listed 17th century building (once a post office), the pub is gorgeous and comfy - even when busy. And it gets very busy often, as it appeals to locals, students and tourists alike. The nice beer garden to the side of the building is particularly noteworthy, but it's not easy to get a table there during peak times. Beer prices are all right for Cambridge, which is not exactly the cheapest area for drinkers, food prices seem sensible, too. Service was commendable, and ordering a drink at the bar didn't take too long.

I haven’t been this disappointed in a long time. Living in Sweden, I wont get a Sunday roast unless I make it myself. Hence, during a weekend trip to Cambridge I wanted to make sure that the actual Sunday roast I got was a great one. After reading the reviews I was sold but I was sold a lie. We arrive at 12:45 to find out that they have run out of chicken. How is it possible to run out of chicken not even gone 13? Seeing as the rest of the items on a Sunday roast are still something I’ve missed I decided to give the beef a try. Both me and my partner chose the beef and we both had very dry pieces of meat as well as it being filled with sinew. The Yorkshire pudding was dry and didn’t taste of anything, the potatoes were a weird texture where many pieces were just empty and dry on the inside. The cauliflower cheese and the carrots were nice and the gravy was too. However, that is where it ended. The atmosphere was nice but unfortunately we were booked at a table that was in the middle of a doorway so people were constantly bumping into my partner and our table. Utterly devastated and I actually cried after our visit here.

It all began normally enough for the pub back in its early years during the 16th and 17th century as it established itself as a busy coaching inn for travellers coming to and from London. When the railway arrived in Cambridge in 1850, The Eagle transitioned from coaching inn to regular tavern. On February 28,1953, pub regular Francis Crick came to The Eagle to announce to the pub’s guests, some of whom were fellow scientists and researchers, that he, together with James Watson, had discovered the double helix structure of DNA – one of, if not the greatest scientific discoveries of the 20th century. Great setting, not so great food. Pub is steeped in history and well worth a visit based on this. But just for a drink. However the wait for food was extensive and distinctly average, with in my opinion small portion sizes with not enough chips. The tables are way too close together you are pretty much on top of the people eating next to you. Won't be rushing back here but definitely a one time visit.

Great pub atmosphere, but didn't open until midday. Lovely outdoor area with effective patio heaters but large inside areas too, with the wonderful RAF bar, where many have signed their names. There is also the link to discovery of DNA being announced as a find by two scientists, controversially..... a female scientist had also worked on this discovery, prior to the announcement, so it is a topic of debate for some. The food is a reasonable price, large selection and looked good. Diners nearby certainly were talking positively about their dining experience, although I only had a drink. If you are a history buff, you can combine a visit to this pub with a visit to the old St Benet's church opposite the pub's entrance (oldest building in Cambridge) and/or a visit to Pembroke or Peterhouse College.
