I had a day to kill in Canterbury and fond memories of this place from visiting a few years ago with my wife. It’s an instantly seductive atmosphere – akin to a French Provençal market housed in an old railway goods shed as its name suggests, right next to Canterbury West Station.

The farmer’s market buzz complete with deli, fishmonger and bars provides the bustle and the restaurant is along the side on a raised mezzanine level enabling you to regard all the activity across the floor.

Atmosphere though is nothing without food and service: that is what brought me back here and several years on it didn’t disappoint. Just the right amount of choices and clearly fresh-product influenced with seasonal rhubarb running through the menu at the moment. The herb crusted bread and salty butter were superb and I plumped for the amuse bouche of devilled eggs, perfectly spiced.

A light and fresh salad starter and the main, hoggett, was cooked to tender perfection with lentils and pink potatoes making a robust and memorable dish.

I realised that although rhubarb is one of my favourite things I had contrived to avoid it in my choices and wondered aloud to my waitress if it would be possible just to have a taste with some cream and brown sugar. The chef obliged with an off-menu dish which was delicious and ensured the final star added for cheery off-piste flexibility.

The wine list was reasonably extensive with a good selection by the glass which is what you look for in solo dining. Service was attentive and certainly charming – perhaps a mite on the inexperienced side: there was a small glitch when the first course proper arrived before the amuse bouche was finished, which always gives the feeling, rather disconcertingly, that you’re being hurried along. This proved not to be the case as I was allowed to linger well past my allotted slot without any issue and my menu queries were helpfully answered.

Price perhaps slightly more than I was expecting but to be quite fair I did start with a kir royale and ended with the suggested house rhubarb sour cocktail as well as two other glasses of wine and four courses. With the quality of the cooking I did not feel overcharged, it really is delightful food in a wonderful setting. Highly...

I booked the restaurant at The Goods Shed based on recent reviews and it was a big disappointment. The management I would point to as the main issue. The restaurant manager was indifferent at best and seemed to have little or no experience in hospitality and customer service. We were not greeted properly as we entered, we were not shown to our table, it was merely gestured at as the waiter rushed by us to other customers, the manager did not approach us at any point in the evening to see if we were comfortable or enjoying ourselves, or the meal, or ask if we needed anything or to say goodbye, please come again, nothing. To the contrary, we were both very cold and the manager left the door open despite our request to close it, and he didn’t explain why it was left open. It was 8.c outside, windy and raining, and the door was left open with the heat pouring out, very wasteful energy management, quite out of sync with the energy climate. He did offer to sit us elsewhere thankfully, however it was still cold. I’m not sure what his role really was as he didn’t seem to do anything or interact with guests. The manager didn’t bring our bill when I requested it from him directly, he asked his already busy waitress to do it, while she was attending others. He seemed unable to interact with or serve guests. He passed our table more than several times during the evening to direct the two waiters to do things, while he did not appear to assist them, which I found strange. The food itself was underwhelming and over-salty and overpriced. This restaurant has clearly gone downhill and relies on its former glory. The two waiters were very sweet but not well trained and made several mistakes on our order and on our bill. No one said goodbye to us as we were leaving or asked us if we had a nice evening, or to thank us for our visit. We were both surprised at the poor training of floor staff and particularly of the attitude of the manager. There was no music and no ambiance. We will not return and will not be...

The Goods Shed is very busy, definitely make a booking in advance, if they say you want to go. They are situated about 15 minutes walk from the cathedral city. They are near the train station. They are in a converted warehouse with a farmers market you can buy fruit, meat, vegetables, bread, cakes, wine and dried goods. You can buy drinks and something to eat in the farmers market area. Ingenious idea idea making use of the space, but also the next to a train station, if you need to purchase anything on your way home. It's nicely laid out and the restaurant is up a few steps and they have outdoor seating/eating area, which looked very busy.

We were brought some bread with butter covered in salt, I requested not salt on my food and I was brought some butter with no salt.

We ordered the sea bass and the lamb roll with potatoes and vegetables (cabbage) to share. The waitress suggested we share the potatoes as they were a large size, and so they were!

The food is delicious 😋, freshly cooked and piping hot. My husband had red wine and had the homemade lemonade, they put a jug of water on the table. We decided to have dessert and both chose the churros with chocolate sauce. This seemed to take a lot longer to arrive than our mains. Unfortunately I couldn't eat mine, it didn't taste right, not sure if it was the oil or something else. They were very hollow and oily. I know some places do a twist on certain foods to make them interesting, but I think stay with what works for these.

They put a 12.5% surcharge on the bill its in the small print on the menu , barely noticable that's quite high, we normally leave a 10% tip for the staff. We paid ÂŁ133.88. We don't have an issue paying for good food or service, but I suspect most people don't tip hence the surcharge.

5 ⭐ given regardless of the dessert, worth...

We went to this restaurant on a day trip to Canterbury. I had no idea where to go in town, but I was recommended the Goods Shed by an internet guide (I think it was TimeOut, but not 100% sure). I’m usually really suspicious about these recommendations, but decided to book it anyway. The thing is I had one of the best meals I’ve ever had in England. My partner and I were simply mesmerised. We weren’t that hungry, so we decided to share two starters and one main dish. The starters were delicious (pork terrine and kedgeree - kedgeree was better in my opinion, but my partner thought it was the pork terrine) and had a distinctive taste. The spices were simple, but tasteful. It felt homely, but also sophisticated at the same time. The highlight was the main dish we shared, we got the lamb leg. It was juicy, tender and I felt it was just melting in my mouth. The side was great too, it had an onion punch that increased the flavour of the vegetables. Finally, we decided to get a dessert as well. The hot chocolate pudding was intense in flavour, it had a bold taste of proper chocolate. Although it wasn’t too sweet, it’s best if shared with someone else. Finally, the service was great, I have no complaints. But the experience was enhanced by the atmosphere. Many restaurants these days have this tendency to put costumers too close to each other in cramped and overcrowded restaurants. At Goods Shed, we got a big table for two and we could have enough privacy not to hear other costumers conversations. The candle-lit environment was also super cosy and romantic. The restaurant is located inside a small market with fresh produce and good quality groceries. If I had more time, I would have definitely browsed more. Great experience!

Farmers’ Market Meets Honest Cooking Had lunch today at The Goods Shed, a rustic restaurant set inside a lively indoor farmers’ market in Canterbury—and the experience was both charming and satisfying. As soon as we ordered, the starters and bread arrived quickly. The mussels in lovage cream were a real highlight—incredibly fresh and flavorful, with a light herbaceous sauce that brought out the natural sweetness of the shellfish. The grilled squid was equally impressive, tender with just the right amount of char, paired beautifully with a zesty green sauce. These dishes set the tone for a promising meal. The complimentary bread was served warm and fresh—simple, but comforting. However, there was a bit of a wait (around 30 minutes) before the mains arrived. But the wait was worth it for the lamb leg. Cooked to perfection, it was beautifully tender and melt-in-the-mouth, accompanied by a creamy cauliflower purĂ©e and cauliflower salad that balanced the richness of the meat. On the other hand, the brandade fishcake was a bit underwhelming—mild in flavor and lacking the depth I had hoped for. The real charm of The Goods Shed isn’t just in the food—it’s the whole atmosphere. You’re dining inside a working farmers’ market, surrounded by local produce, cheeses, artisan bread, and specialty stalls. After your meal, a stroll through the market is a must—it feels like part of the experience. ✅ A great spot for families, couples, or friends looking to enjoy seasonal food with a sense of place. Highly recommended for those who love fresh, local, and honestly prepared food in a warm, market-style setting.

Nestled amidst the historic charm of Canterbury, The Goods Shed isn't just an indoor food market; it's a captivating experience for all senses. Housed within a converted Victorian railway shed, the very essence of the building whispers tales of a bygone era. But step inside, and you're greeted with a vibrant atmosphere that celebrates fresh, seasonal produce. The Goods Shed's charm begins even before you dig into the food. The soaring arched windows bathe the space in natural light, showcasing the exposed brickwork and industrial-chic decor. Fresh flowers grace the sanded-down wooden tables, adding a touch of whimsical romance. Whether you choose a cozy corner or a table overlooking the bustling market area, the ambiance is undeniably inviting. The Goods Shed's connection to fresh, local produce is evident from the start. The space within houses a restaurant and for those seeking a more casual experience, the adjoining market area offers a variety of food stalls and artisan producers, perfect for grabbing a bite or browsing for gourmet goodies. The Goods Shed is a must-visit for anyone seeking a local food experience that goes beyond just the food. It's a celebration of fresh produce, culinary innovation, and the charm of a bygone era. Whether you're a local resident or a visitor exploring Canterbury, The Goods Shed promises a memorable experience that will leave you feeling satisfied food wise in every way!

The Goods Shed is beautiful. A wonderfully restored building, it oozes character and history. The huge windows, the amazing ceiling and the interior which keeps to a theme of industrial chic. The food was delicious and much of it sourced locally. We started with some local organic sparkling wine, the gruyeres and terrine - all of which were so divine I didn’t want it to end! My partner had duck which was so tender; I had venison which was so flavoursome. The potatoes were delicious and the accompanying veg was also cooked to perfection. Our server, Victoria, was very helpful and attentive. The only flaw is that when we went to pay, we don’t carry cash so paid by card. We couldn’t tip on the card machine so felt really awful about not being able to give Victoria a tip! Please fix this to avoid such awkward situations in future and allow your wonderful staff to receive tips. Thanks for an amazing evening!

Seating area located next to/inside the vibrant Goods Shed market. Service was fairly friendly and attentive, but very slow! They reassured us that everything was alright and the kitchen was running fine but it still took a considerable amount of time to get our mains. I had the carrots and cucumber with anchovy mayo to start - wouldn't recommend. As nice and fresh as it all was, nowhere on the menu did it say it would be raw and just assembled. The mayo was also quite weak, especially for an anchovy mayo. For the main, I had the lamb - sorry I can't remember what came with it, but it was very tasty - would recommend. Pricepoint is leaning towards overpriced, some items are better value than others. Overall experience was quite good, except for the speed.

Great place to dine and support local produce. Bustling farmer maker with some true delights to be found. Wasn't to keen on the beefburgers from the butchers, tasted a bit floral for my liking. Had a delicious 3 course lunch in the restaurant and found the food fresh with plenty of flavour, also well presented and fairly priced. Had the lamb leg which was amazing and a delight asparagus side dish. Good Selection of drinks but unfortunately they sold out of the bottle lagers! Still the jug of wine we chose was excellent. However we did find our desserts a little over sugared. Staff polite and professional. Limited parking outside for 2 hours, there is free parking on Saturday at the end of the next turning for 4 hours. Its a 8 min walk from the Good Shed.
