This is a nice space with good food and decent prices. HOWEVER, the owner, who is often there, is outspoken and frankly extremely misogynistic. He has a very loud voice and while trying to relax with a coffee, I could not help overhearing his conversation with a customer. It ruined my experience and I will never be going back. He was discussing about getting a new flat mate. He was speaking incredibly negatively about women in general, and sexualising them, even joking about wanting a woman with 'slight OCD'. Which is horrifically insensitive. On top of this, he kept saying how he didn't want a male flat mate, as there would be a worry that is this man was drunk, he would advance on his girlfriend. This is not my first bad experience with him there. Would avoid.
In reply to your reply. Thank you for the offer of free cake and coffee. However, I will not be coming back to your coffee shop. I believe your reply was touching on 'mansplaining' - telling me what I interpreted. You try to defend yourself by saying that if you were misogynistic, your prospective landlord wouldn't have liked that. However, he...
Read moreI feel absolutely blindsided by how this place made me feel, especially as a local customer who’s been coming here for years. I’d just finished my coffee and was quietly reading, , finally catching a moment of peace after a difficult morning. That calm was cut short when a staff member approached me and asked if I’d give up my table (a small one for 2) so it could be joined with another for a larger group “because they had a buggy.”
I explained I was about to order something else and asked if I’d still be able to use the table to prop my order on if I moved. Rather than a clear answer, I was met with vague avoidance. The message was obvious: I was expected to move. The interaction left me feeling embarrassed, dismissed, and completely devalued as a loyal customer - alongside a teary walk home. If I'd known my value as a solo customer relied on it being quiet, I would have chosen a different location.
Absolutely gutting after supporting this place...
Read moreThese guys know what they are doing. Beautifully run by the host, Quin, who always has something ‘out the back’ that surprises and inspires.
The best cheese and ham sandwich in Edinburgh with English mustard rather than French - chunky crusty bread, lashings of butter etc.....toasted or just ‘doorstop’ thick.
Delightful, soft, elegant interior nodding to a glamour where all that is missing is a bow tie, a mink stole and coupe of champagne. The opposite of Craft and Rustic.
Also - Quin has a massive stylish table in the anti room ‘salon’ for Lap Tops to spread out, that leaves the intimacy of the four Brief Encounter spaces for dates, quiet and elegant reflection and some internal drifting.
I suggest the window seat, where everything is seen yet no one is looking.
It is a coffee shop. The Coffee Shop. The Nook. My...
