My wife and I dined here a few weeks ago. It was a Saturday night but thankfully we were able to book a last minute table. Excellent setting and the restaurant is quite nice inside. The service was very good. I don’t remember having to wait too long. Staff were pleasant and helpful with menu suggestions. I was hungry as hadn’t eaten properly all day so had built an appetite. For starters we shared the bread selection and the chicken tempura. We thought the bread selection was nice with varying types of bread but perhaps a little expensive for what it was, coming just shy of £7. The chicken tempura was tasty and came with a nice dip. My one criticism is that the batter lacked crisp. For mains my wife got the fish and chips and I got the recommended king rib supper, which is slow cooked pork, char sui glaze, katsu ketchup, pickled onion with fries. My wife enjoyed your fish and chips but personally I felt that the batter looked wet like an otters pocket. Certainly not like the crispy batter they have on their website. The wife said the taste of the fish was lovely but I feel that the batter was a let down but I suppose that’s my opinion and some people might like that style of batter. The chips were nice and chunky. My king rib supper was pretty good. The pork has great flavour and it was a nice addition to the menu as it’s not something you’d usually get. Chips were fine but were enhanced by the delicious katsu ketchup. We also had some honey roasted carrots as a side which were decent. For dessert my wife got the salted caramel tablet sundae and I got the raspberry cranachan pavlova. I don’t know if it’s because my sister recently made such an awesome pavlova and that I had misleading expectations but this pavlova was a little disappointing. It was too hard and dry for my liking. My wife’s tablet sundae was sweet but still tasty and it was a large portion. Overall we thought it was a little expensive and maybe my rating is a little harsh but nothing stood out for us. I am not against returning, especially knowing they do tacos...
Read moreThis must be my 6th visit in a short time I’ve always been happy, it’s lovely inside and staff are nice. I was disappointed this time, I ordered 2 glasses of wine with lemonade as we were both driving and I asked for them to be in tall glasses. I paid for it before the meal and was shocked it came to £25!! My friend queried this and the young waitress said she was just back from holiday and the prices had shot up. We again asked why was it so expensive for half a glass of wine topped up with lemonade? The young lady went to the bar and the young man said he had given us a large measure not a small. Firstly I was not offered a choice of size, and the wine and Lemonade came in a large wine glass not tall. My friend pointed out it would have been cheaper buying a bottle of wine if we had not been driving! I pointed out after looking through the drinks list the cocktails were much cheaper!!! We were also handed menus, I asked if they had stopped cooking the battered haggis balls? And the waitress said yes . I pointed to my phone and explained they were still on the menu on the website which I had looked at in the morning. The waitress explained that the website shouldn’t be showing that, and promptly said she could fetch a different menu. When the second menu arrived you had the option to have 2 courses for £19.95, surly customers should have the choice of both menus rather than being handed the more expensive one first? The couple at the table beside us asked if we had a different menu to them, I said yes just ask for the menu we have as the choices are slightly different which they proceeded to do so. We were bith looking forward to our catch up and meeting at what we called “our” restaurant, however left feeling...
Read moreTook my father in law here last night for a treat and we were all disappointed by the meal. We had been here before when the restaurant first opened and thought the food was great, but sadly it feels like standards have slipped. My partner and I are both vegan, but there are no vegan mains or starters advertised on the menu. We asked the waiting staff and they seemed confused by the difference between vegetarian and vegan. Eventually we were offered a burger, which was fine, but we were made to feel uncomfortable and an inconvenience for our dietary requirements. This is not the first time this has happened at Thirty Knots - we visited a few months ago and had a very similar experience. We sat outside and were told there were no vegan options on the outside menu. This is very unusual for South Queensferry - every other restaurant either has a multiple vegan options on the menu or are happy to accommodate. Staff should be trained to deal with different dietary requirements. My father in law’s salmon was fine but quite dry due to a lack of sauce and too much rice - very disappointing for a £20 dish. Interestingly there were two vegan options on the dessert menu which were great. It’s just a shame there was next to nothing for us on the rest of the menu. Meanwhile, service was slow. It was a busy night but looked understaffed. It took us a while for our table to be cleared and for us to order our desserts and get the bill. Overall this was a disappointing experience and we likely wont be visiting for food any time soon, unless the...
