Westgate, located in Edinburgh, recently hosted a group of 50 people on a rugby tour and delivered an exceptional dining experience that merits a detailed review. Here's how Westgate managed to impress. Venue and Atmosphere The setting at Westgate was well-suited for a large group, offering spacious seating that maintained a cozy, inviting atmosphere. Despite the large number of guests, the noise level was well-managed, allowing for easy conversation. The decor, which blends traditional and modern Scottish elements, added to the enjoyable environment. Service The service was a standout aspect of the experience. The staff were commendable for their efficiency and attentiveness. Handling a group of 50, especially energetic rugby players, can be daunting, yet the servers remained professional, responsive, and friendly throughout the meal. The service was quick, with minimal waiting time, which is crucial for large groups and events. Food The quality of the food served at Westgate was excellent. The menu offered a variety of options catering to different dietary needs, including vegetarian and gluten-free choices. Portion sizes were generous, ensuring that all guests were satisfied. The dishes were flavorful, well-seasoned and cooked to perfection. Overall Experience Westgate managed to deliver a thoroughly enjoyable experience for a large group. The combination of a well-prepared venue, stellar service, and high-quality food contributed to a successful event. This restaurant is highly recommended for anyone looking to host a large group. In summary, Westgate in Edinburgh is an excellent choice for group dining, adept at handling large parties with grace and professionalism. They provided a memorable experience for the rugby tour group, making it a highlight of their visit to Edinburgh.

Went as a family of 4 for a mother's Day dinner, looks like we had missed the mad rush so wasn't overly busy (6pm) we ordered 3 starters 3 steaks and a pie and mash. The starters came out 20mins later, the garlic was soggy and 1 slice didn't even have any cheese on it. The halloumi fries looked like they had been triple fried and almost hollow in the middle. The chicken strips were great I would recommend them. Another 30minutes later came our main courses, I wish they hadn't. 2 steaks asked for medium rare and we ended up with I would say rare at a push (attached photos). One steak was asked for medium which was more medium rare. The onion rings were described as crispy again they looked like they had been sitting around and were over cooked mush with no crispy nor crunch. I couldn't eat my steak as it was so rare and actually cold. I couldn't eat any of my meal after this as I was completely put off. My sister was the same but managed to eat most of her steak and the chips. I spoke to whom I assume was front of house manager/senior member of staff, which took about 15/20mins and eventually She came back and asked if everything was ok I told her I asked for medium rare and before I said anything else she said oh that looks rare. I gave her my feedback on our meal and told her I couldn't eat anything else now. Her reply was "thanks for letting me know I'll pass to the chef" then took the plates and walked away. I feel like our table was avoided due to amount of food left on the table, terrible service and the less said about the food the better. I wish I had taken more photos to share with you, but please avoid especially for steak/service. I would give 0* if I had the option to.

I just returned from taking my two young daughters out for dinner, and the service was terrible. The waitress seated us and then walked away. I assumed she was fetching kids' menus, but after 10 minutes, there was still no sign of them, so I had to find her and ask. When we ordered, the kids' Mac & Cheese was very disappointing. It came without the advertised garlic bread, and there was no mention of it missing. When I asked, the waitress simply said there was none and offered a bowl of chips for them to share instead. I ordered a steak but didn’t receive a steak knife, so I had to track her down again to request one. My kids wanted tomato sauce, and again, I had to find her to ask for it. After finishing our meal, we waited for them to clear the table so we could order ice cream. Despite there being only one other table occupied, the two waitresses were standing around chatting. After about 15 minutes, I approached them to ask if they could clear our plates. They did, and we ordered ice cream, which then took another 20 minutes to arrive. I didn’t expect much from this place, but I did expect some basic level of service.

I’ve been here 9/10 times in the past 2 years and I always come back to see if it’s better, out of those times only 1 has been enjoyable. The last time I was here a month or so ago, I returned the turkey to the carver as it was pink and mushy / raw. He apologised (older carver) and said yeah it was cooked (it was not.) it was slithery and pink, not white and cooked.. and he huffed and gave me a slice from the other side of the turkey that was granted not mushy.. but still a pink so I left it on my plate.

I was here on Friday with my husband and 2 kids. We always have to wait forever for drinks when ordering on the app. This is a common issue whether you order on the app or not the drinks take forever. We’ll be almost finished the meal and no drinks. So 40 mins in I had to ask a waitress quickly passing by to check where the drinks were and she came back and said the bar didn’t have my order, what did I order for drinks? My order I did on the app they didn’t have it ?? I went in my app and told her our drinks off the order… she came back with the drinks and an extra drink by mistake and the cordial and lemonade was bitter and off. I had to queue and return this to the bar to be replaced, I said to the bar girl who then took a glass and tasted the lemonade draught to check this and agreed it was like just soda water and disgusting. I then had to stand and wait for the drink to be replaced in the pump before my drink was remade.

The carvery food was awful. The parsnips were black and hard, sat too long or not they were inedible. There was no broccoli left it was empty and the pot behind it was more stuffing. The roast potatoes were finished and not replaced with a pot at the back I burnt my hand trying to get the lid off to get some. The gravies were mixed up under the sign so my kids had onion gravy by accident as the onion gravy was under the ‘gravy’ sign full of onions, the real gravy was under the onion gravy sign.

My daughter showed the carver our app order (2 adult and 2 kids carveries) .. he did my 2 kids then me.. he then stopped my husband (who is black) and asked for his ticket for food. I said we’ve just shown you the app order and showed him again as the carver was skeptical. It made my husband very uncomfortable as my 2 kids and me were served fine on the same ticket but he was stopped and asked for his ticket for carvery (after saying what meat he wants) infront of the queue of people behind us, so I had to come over from the veg and show the app order again, and the carver was quite dismissive then served my husband. It may have been a genuine mistake but it felt very passive aggressive after already been shown the app order of 2 adult and 2 kids carvery to then cut my husband off when we’re all at the veg part for where is his ticket. He felt embarrassed by this as it was already shown and he didn’t have it, so held up the queue for others while I came over and showed it again.

The older gentleman carver is very off, he is the same one who served me pink turkey the other month and told me it was cooked like I was stupid. It was pink and slimy and raw. It was the same man on Friday who embarrassed my husband after already being shown our order for 2 adult and 2 kids carveries (which he repeated back to us after seeing the order) and serving me and my 2 kids, then stopping my husband for his ticket when we were already along and the veg.

This experience was not enjoyable. Out of all of our visits all £40+ only 1 has been ok. I’ve gave you lots of chances to improve and it gets worse every time I come, my husband felt so bad he does not want to come back.

You pay to have a nice meal in a cost of living crisis and you are treated badly and the food is disastrous but as you’ve paid before the having the experience you cannot complain. Nobody asks was everything ok etc because they probably know it isn’t so don’t even approach you .

Will not be back. Disappointing as I’ve gave the benefit of the doubt so many times and it just gets worse! And it’s not cheap either. Spend your...

Unfortunately, we had quite a poor experience here yesterday evening. When we arrived, we were seated at a pre booked table. This was in the “family” area, which was far too noisy for us. Granted, we had booked with a child so I have no expectation to have automatically been seated somewhere else, however the reason it was so noisy was the large group of adults sat there drinking. When we asked to be moved elsewhere, this was accommodated really quickly, and we are thankful for this. The service however was very poor. We ordered on the app. After 25 minutes, we decided to go and ask where our 3 soft drinks, and tickets for the carvery were. We were advised that they were “very busy”, but don’t believe this is a fair excuse for the wait on drinks. We were also told that we didn’t have to wait for tickets for the carvery, and could’ve gone straight up. We were told the app should’ve told us this, but it didn’t. So, we went up for the carvery. We waited for around 5 minutes before the server came out. Believe the servers name was Keith, and they were lovely. (I’m assuming there’s a competition going on for which staff member gets the most reviews about them, and doubt the kitchen staff get many of these - they deserve to as they were lovely!). However, Keith asked us for our carvery tickets, so clearly we were meant to have been provided these! After explaining and showing the order confirmation in the app, Keith sliced our meats. The meats were great, and the selection on the deck was huge, mushy peas (on a roast dinner, is this a Scottish thing?!), and the choice of normal or onion gravy was fabulous. The green beans however were inedible, and the roast potatoes were rock hard and very disappointing. Nice to see the pigs in blankets not being cremated though like they tend to be at other places in the chain! We ordered dessert. A server came and cleared the table, not saying a word to us or acknowledging us in any way. When the dessert came, the same server brought this over, again not saying a single word, just placing it on the table. Can’t decide if they had taken a dislike to us or were just a bit done, but it felt a bit rude! The kids fruit sundae was lovely, and a real hit. However, I decided to have the kids portion of the apple and cherry crumble as I was a bit stuffed already. There were no cherries in it, and barely had any crumble covering next-to-raw apple. This was yucky. In conclusion, it was a frustrating experience overall. Would we come here again? We live 5 hours away so maybe not! But would we recommend this pub over others in the chain? Unfortunately, no. We’ve had great experiences with Farmhouse Inns in the past, but this pub, on this occasion,...

Absolutely appalling venue for Christmas day meal. They had clearly overbooked, no doubt on purpose to rake that money in, but at the expense of literally ever other member of public that chose to book there. The staff seemed to have no idea what they were doing, as if there was no leadership. This meant insane waiting time. The place was overcrowded, claustrophobic, and utter chaos.

My party arrived for a 1330 booking and every course took an age to arrive. I couldn't even tolerate waiting for my dessert to arrive and left by 1630. By 'left' I mean fought my way out to the front door through a sea of others. Furthermore, the table we were allocated was stuffed away at the very back, and far too small for the amount of people in our party. So much so that I had one leg around the back of one persons chair, the other under the table, all while rubbing shoulders with people on either side of me. An absolute joke!

To make matters worse, there was zero wheelchair access to and from our table, and if I wanted to go to the carvery, toilet, or anything else, I had to climb over chairs, or squeeze between the tables and chairs of other guests. That place was a death trap in the event of an emergency where quick evacuation was required.

The starter was limp, the carvery was decent, and the only positive thing I have to say is about the staff member (lovely English gent) serving at the carvery. Really friendly, positive and engaged so well with everyone else. Which I'm sure must have been difficult for the man, given that that general vibe of most of the customers I could see around me was one of disappointment, frustration, annoyance and anger. Give that guy a pay rise. Give the people responsible for that absolute rip-off their P45's.

If I could give a - 10 I would. 1 star will have to do. Shame on you! I will...
