Popped in for dinner on a Sunday night during a bank holiday. The first waitperson we encountered instantly tried to up sell us on appetizers and inexpensive Indian beer. We requested a beer from the pub and it felt like a burden. We also requested water and received two little glasses, eventually requesting a pitcher which was brought to us AFTER we finished our dinner.
Two of the three waiters who assisted us made us feel like absolute burdens. They were annoyed when we asked for our check, annoyed when we asked for our food to be boxed up for takeaway, and annoyed that we even existed. The other waiter, a younger one with hand tattoos (so you can remember who he is!) was very friendly, nice and did his best despite the pressures of the busy establishment and his not so friendly co-workers.
We had to wait 15 minutes just to get our check. We were ignored when we first asked for it. The second time we asked for it we were told we would have to wait. Oh, and we did - 10 more minutes.
Food wise? The menu is huge and rice and naan are ala carte - you don't get the option of one being served with your meal. The chicken tikka masala was the most frighteningly sugary sweet entree I have ever had - I was pretty shocked. It tasted like granulated sugar had been doused all over it. My teeth hurt from just eating it, I think I got a cavity!
The chicken tikka methi was very good and the saag paneer was average. The naan was good and rice was ok. Large chunks of garlic in the garlic rice will please a garlic fanatic.
I would not go out of my way for this restaurant and advise you go elsewhere if craving Indian food in...
Read moreExcellent seafood curry. We were originally offered Indian fair from our hotel, but their menu seemed a little limited. We found maharaja just about a five minute walk. This is our first restaurant stop and the Cotswolds as we start our trek down the Cotswolds way. We visited and put in a reservation for 6 PM . We arrived a little early and had a cider and beer at the pub out front. Great friendly local place with very affordable ciders and beers. We arrived a little after six for our reservation and were seated immediately. They have an extensive offering it was really hard to choose .
I started with the Adha scallops - it had a light ginger and herb flavoring on the baby scallops. For dinner I had the Bangla fish Tawa- it has shrimp and shellfish in it, and the sauce is described as sensational, hot, sweet and tangy relish sauce - it was a light brown sauce that was indeed fantastic and slightly tangy. I would definitely order this again. I also had a side order of saag. We had garlic naan for the table. Other table favorites included the duck . The tandoori duck starter was excellent. For our rice accompaniment, we had the coconut rice that has a little bit of sweetness to it and the fried rice which was...
Read moreWe went to this restaurant by chance as we were staying in the area. It was a Friday evening and we were given a table fairly quickly. It was a very busy evening with two parties of ten also in the restaurant, service wasn’t rapid but acceptable and given the two large groups, completely understandable. The food was excellent and the prices very reasonable. Would we go again? Yes! We did on the the Sunday night of the same weekend ! That’s how good it was. The service was absolutely spot on ( without the large groups , who obviously take some looking after ) and the food, if anything, was better than the Friday night! The staff are attentive, yet make you feel relaxed and they have a great sense of humour. If I could give eleven out of ten I would. Well done Maharaja restaurant, you are exceptional! We...
