Charlie's — Restaurant in Derbyshire Dales

Cozy nice space. We had dinner there at 7:45pm on a Saturday. There was only one person working front of house for 10ish tables. I felt bad for her! As a result service was low (took about an hour and a half for two ppl to eat and pay, no cocktails or desserts) and a little spotty ( for example once the food was served, she never checked back in and we couldn’t catch her eye so our fish fry went without tartar/anything to dip it in, not a huge deal, just bland.). The potato leek soup was too salty.

One note that I missed on the entrees: they come with a huge serving of boiled potatoes and veg. Also very bland and just unexpected, it was a lot of food and much went to waste - there were 6+full sized boiled yellow potatoes! I think the experience might be better for breakfast or lunch. When we stopped in to make a reservation earlier in the day, we got greeted by the on-site dog...

I must disagree with the first review - I have been to Charlie's many, many times (several times with my wife who is Asian ethnicity) and have always found it to be a very friendly place. The food is superb value for money (big portions), they do a great cheeseburger, and the black pudding salad is very good. If you get there before 11 you can have the full english, which is a fantastic hangover cure! Deserts there are lovely, and I will be going one evening soon as they have started doing evening meals fri, sat and sun (I think). There are nice areas outside at the front and back when the weather is good, or a place by the fire inside...

My wife and I booked to eat here based on a friends recommendation as we were staying at Chatsworth caravan site. Couldn't have been happier with the choice. It seemed to be a two person operation with what I assume was Charlie in the kitchen and possibly his wife? front of house. Despite the fact there was quite a large party eating in the service couldn't have been better. Our food came out quickly and cooked perfectly. I also noticed the large party all got their starters in quick succession (quite an achievement). Overall good food, good service, nice atmosphere and what I considered value for money.
