Below average Sunday roast dinner. Would not go if for a roast dinner for a special occasion. Lots of empty seats in the restaurant area which should have been a sign....4 of us had roast dinner on a Sunday, certainly not worth the ~ £18 a meal + drinks to pay on top. Expect a really nice dinner for that price. The price either needs dropping quite a bit, or the standards raising a lot for the price point/standard to be correct.
Once we moved the big Yorkshire pudding out the way, there really wasn't a lot on the plate. I only had 2 very small roast potatoes. Would have appreciated a few more potatoes at the size they were and/or some mash potato to fill out the empty space, and also some carrots, as there weren't many vegetables on the plate either. ''Seasonal veg''; carrots are in season in November and aren't expensive.
There was no real flavour/seasoning, very bland. A couple of the group had lamb. Asked about mint sauce, the pub didn't have any...Expect any pub that serves lamb on a Sunday to have mint sauce. No cutlery given with the dinners/already on the table, even though we booked in advance, had to ask for cutlery after our dinners were served.
No one interested in coming over to take for the bill. As other reviews have said, we had to go up to the bar to pay. When we did get up to the bar to pay, staff tried to charge for the wrong table; for the group of 4 next to us who had wine etc/a much bigger bill. Shows poor organisation on which table is which. Would have been of detriment to the pub had it have been the other way round, and the larger table had left first, after paying for a smaller bill, as we would not have paid for their bigger/incorrect bill!
No toilet roll in the one ladies toilet, had to wait for the other cubicle to become free. Even then there was only a tiny bit in that cubicle & a lot of empty rolls. A sign that the toilets had not been serviced all day Sunday until at least 6pm when I went in there. Wasn't busy so staff could have gone in to top up loo roll.
Visited Sun 19th Nov 2023 4pm, in case the pub is interested in addressing any of these issues with the kitchen. Suggest bigger portions/more flavour. More potatoes/veg/seasoning don't cost that much for any pub, yet really make a difference to the customer's experience. + it's in the pub's interest to visit the table to take bill payment and get the tables/orders the right way around...
Portion size appropriate for a 90 yr old, not 4 young/middle aged adults. Our plates were cleared not because we thoroughly enjoyed the meal, it was because we were all...

On Saturday, my partner ordered a burger and I ordered the pie. When the food arrived, the waitress dropped the bun and most of the slaw onto my partner’s shirt because the kitchen hadn’t even secured the burger properly with the skewer. Accidents happen, but the rushed apology (“sorry, we’re very busy today”) didn’t feel genuine. My partner asked for the dish to be replaced, but within three minutes the same burger was returned with a little slaw added back. It was clear it had not been remade. My pie was passable but nothing special, and the mayonnaise we were given for the fries was honestly one of the worst condiments I’ve ever tasted — more like a mix of sauce and detergent than actual mayo.
Despite this, we decided to give the pub a second chance on Monday before catching our train back home. This time we only ordered two sandwiches and a side of fries. We waited 55 minutes with no food. Twice, the friendly waiter (the only positive part of the visit) chased it up, each time being told by the kitchen it would be “5–8 minutes.” Still nothing came. Eventually, with time running out before our train, I had to cancel the order. The bartender processed the refund but didn’t even bother to apologise for the wait or the inconvenience.
For a place that presents itself as a proper gastropub, this level of service and quality is unacceptable. Between the careless food handling, the lack of accountability, the poor kitchen standards, and the complete absence of a sincere apology, I cannot recommend this pub to anyone — besides maybe for couple of pints. Matlock has far better options — I would strongly suggest...

Pleasant staff, and a nice ambience in the dining room. It gave unrenovated Bill’s but without the decorations and raffia. Prices are a bit high for what it is flavour and excitement wise. The portions were large however they should focus on reducing the quantity and increasing the quality of the food. That’s just my opinion though. When we asked for a drinks menu they said they didn’t have one, only food menus which seemed a bit strange.…
I had the half chicken with chips, which were good and honestly the chicken was massive. It was massive, probably half was bigger than a whole small chicken so defiantly worth the price. It had kind of a smoky a barbecue flavour to it which was odd but not unpleasant and it was moist not dry. In fact it was a very nice moist chicken which was good.
A number of my friends had the pie of the day, can’t remember the flavour, with one calling it a bit sweaty and salty - I don’t think they were very impressed. To be honest, I think I was a regret. I was told the mash was a bit sticky - as if they had used the wrong potato. Maybe next time use a Maris Piper. Just a suggestion.
In terms of the burger, we asked for the one with all the regular toppings but the veggie patties with bacon on the side and the bacon was not on the side.
They kindly brought ketchup and mayo without being asked which was nice however I did also ask for spicy mayo with my chicken and received only chilli sauce.
However, as I said staff were nice and pleasant and the service was fast enough. I thought the piano as a table is quite fun. We were suggested this by someone (after we had already been) so it is probably one of the best...
