Our entire Christmas Dinner experience was terrible, when you pay an extra ยฃ50 per person per meal than you would normally pay any other day you expect something better, food or service. We got neither infact it was worse.
We got there and our table wasnโt ready, yes that happens alot but not when itโs ยฃ63 per person. It should be ready, after 15 minutes we got put on another table, which was too small, i was basically put on the end of a table so when my soup came out they could not even fit my bowl on the table, the reason i gave 2 stars was because Angela who was a star throughout got me a little table to go at the end.
Starters were ok at best, we then queued for 15 minutes for our food, again pretty standard at a Toby but when your paying ยฃ10 not ยฃ63, in previous years at other restaurants on Christmas Day we have gone up a table at a time, we had my mother in law with us who is on crutches so was not a nice experience for her.
Then we got to the food deck and there was a huge hair on the sprouts, this meant two of our group would not eat at all as they were put off, the rest of us did eat because we had paid for it but it was still not pleasant.
Angela who couldnโt do enough for us told a Manager who came out to speak us and you could tell he could not be bothered with us at all, he said โi hear something is wrong with your food do you want a drink or owtโ by this point i just said no and wanted to leave. We should have been offered some compensation. The whole restaurant was packed and over run, i heard so many people complaining and i also heard a manager say to Angela she looked angry and to smile, which should have been done in private.
The desserts were the best thing. 1 star across the board, extra star for service for Angela, she was a star.

After being seated we waited 10 minutes before being asked if we had drinks on the way, to which we had said no and then ordered a drink. Our waitress who was called Freya looked disinterested and made no effort to look like she enjoyed her job.
After our food we looked through the dessert menu with the idea of ordering 2 adult desserts and one kids ice cream that is supposed to come with the kids carvery. We waited patiently for the waitress to take away our plates and ask if we wanted a dessert however this did not happen, we sat for 40 minutes waiting. A table that had arrived after us had their plates cleared away as soon as theyโd finished eating and were asked about dessert! Still we sat waiting to see if we were going to be asked and cleared, the child who was with us even started to say she was bored and ask โwhy is that woman walking past usโ (that woman being the waitress in our area).
Fed up of waiting longer since tables who had arrived a lot later than us were clearly being waited on and we were not we walked to the bar to pay and go find pudding elsewhere. Behind the bar was again Freya and another male who were stood having a conversation about diarrhoea and sickness. We asked to pay and then left, not once were we checked on to see if everything was okay even at the bar when paying. Absolutely disgusted with the lack of customer service and now at home with an upset 6 year old who wants to know why the woman ignored them and why they were waiting 40+ minutes after eating to still not be asked if they would like the ice cream that...
ย ย ย Read moreFantastic visit to this premises of Toby Carvery.
Was greeted by a friendly chap who seated us immediately. We requested a booth due to a child with sensory issues and was glad they took this into account and had given us a booth out the way (the only downside is this booth has its own music speaker which, depending on the music, can be loud. But thankfully not too bad).
Angela who came and served us was fantastic. Very friendly and helpful, and great with the kids. She helped us navigate the drinks options so we got the best out of out meal. And was happy to help.
The family all chose the carvery and Ian was our carver. He was great and took the time to speak to the kids as we selected our meat. I was hoping he wouldn't ask me whether I wanted to upgrade or not (so I got it free) but being the consummate professional he did ask, and of course, I upgraded.
The food was fantastic as is to be expected, and the meat (particularly the pork) cooked to perfection. All the side and veg options were well stocked and it was obvious Ian and the rest of the kitchen team were keeping an eye on it.
I often find other Toby Carvery's more local to me vary in quality depending on what day and how busy they are. This is now my 3rd visit to this particular one, and prefer it over the more local ones and it employs the right people and always feel welcome.
As an aside, the price for meals here is generally pretty good, particularly if you take advantage of the kids eat for ยฃ1 options during most half terms. With a king size, regular size, two kids carveries and drinks all round we only ended up paying ยฃ10 per head. Very reasonable for what you get.
Highly recommend if you're...
