I cannot find a fault with this restaurant!
From walking off the main high street you are greeted with a lovely path adorned with festoon lighting. The modern and contemporary aesthetic hints at what’s on the inside.
The Steamers team have produced a wonderful look and feel internally and we were struck by the lighting that invites you through the space. The modern refurbishment works beautifully with the original Devon stone walls. By adding some bold colours with the quality and comfortable furniture adds to the ‘welcoming feeling’ of the space. To ensure the stone walls and floors don’t create a loud echoing space they have used acoustically designed lighting and panelling throughout which really helps the atmosphere.
The food! Well we had great expectations given how impressive the restaurant is.. We were not disappointed. The food was exceptional, everything we had was beautifully prepared & presented. My personal favourite was the sea bass which was without a doubt the best I’ve had.. And I love sea bass!
The menus are considered and focused on local produce, which we believe added to our overall dinning experience. It’s lovely to sit comfortably, with an extensive wine selection, first class service, and beautiful food.
Our overall dining experience was nothing short of spectacular! I’m sure this place will be a destination restaurant that brings people from far and wide!
We will be back to this hidden gem.. well done...
Read moreI don’t usually write reviews but I recently came across Steamers while on a road trip in Devon just before Christmas. Initially intrigued by the cute entrance, the atmosphere inside was warm and inviting, and the food was exceptional.
They had an especially curated Christmas menu, we went with the three-course option which truly exceeded our expectations. For starters, we shared the scallops and turkey croquettes, both of which were beautifully presented and bursting with flavour. The scallops were large, tender, and came with a pistachio sauce which I thought was very unique. The turkey croquettes were a festive twist on a tapas classic.
For the mains, we had the pork tenderloins and the brill. The pork was succulent and full of flavour and the brill was cooked to perfection with a buttery finish that had us almost licking the entire plate. For dessert we got the chocolate and raspberry torte and a few espresso martinis that were delicious.
After chatting with the staff, we were also pleased to hear that the restaurant is run by a family and it’s clear they’re putting their heart and soul into the place. The food, service, modern interior design and overall experience reflected the passion and care of the new owners - which was great to see.
If you find yourself in Beer or East Devon in general, I highly recommend a visit/trip to Steamers - it’s a true gem, and we can’t wait to come back the next time...
Read morePerhaps the main chef was off on a Sunday night, but ours was a forgettable experience.
We ordered 2 starters & 2 mains. In the end, we did not want to stay one moment longer, but were made to wait another 20 minutes for the card machine.
Starters: The homemade bread was alright (country style), but the balsamic vinegar stayed stubbornly at the bottom of the olive oil, despite rigorous stirring with a fork. The Courgette fritters were competently fried, if lacking in interest.
Mains: The steak & ale pie tasted alright, though the steak was a tad dry, and there wasn't enough of the stuffing compared to the pie shell. The fish & chip with curry sauce should've been an old standby that offered an interesting twist with the curry. But the fish didn't taste that fresh - in a village that has fishing boats lining the waterfront. The curry sauce was about the lamest "curry" I've ever encountered: washed down, sweetened up, and managed to be totally bland.
The only standouts were the very good mashed potatoes and the smashed peas with mint.
The music blared non-stop. We did not enjoy any aspect of this whole experience. The bill came to nearly the same as our last night's dinner at a different restaurant in Beer, which was...
