We visited the St George and Dragon during a COVID-induced staycation in Devon. We wanted to take advantage of the Eat Out scheme for lunch on a Tuesday and this was one of the few pubs with availability. We were welcomed by a friendly staff member and chose to sit outside. Unfortunately in the name of misguided COVID precautions there's plastic tiger tape strung around much of the garden, blocking off areas which have no obvious reason for being blocked off - surely more space is better? The atmosphere was further spoiled by the arrival of the Brakes delivery van, who left his engine running for much longer than was necessary. Still, the service was friendly and could not be faulted. Unfortunately the speed of service left a lot to be desired and a relatively simple meal took over an hour and a half from start to finish. Starters: Pâté - nice but I will never understand why places like this think two tiny pieces of toast are sufficient. It's literally the cheapest thing on the plate. Lamb Kofta - it was good Mains: Brisket Sandwich - cut from the same tiny loaf as the toast for the pâté. Beef dripping sauce seems to basically mean that the fat from slow cooking is left in. Bland. Fishcakes - nice Dessert: Banoffee with ice cream - excellent

Friendly and Pub with a homely atmosphere 🌟 We visited the St George and Dragon in the summer holidays during quieter hours and was treated to friendly service and food that was well cooked and plentiful in portion, but perhaps lacking a bit of spice and flavour. We had the two courses for £16 which worked out as a very good deal for the food we had. The pizza was fresh and appeared to be homemade but had little toppings on top. The calamari was bland and the chips were not soft and fluffy and were rather chewy. We were left waiting for service on multiple occasions and it appeared that we had been forgotten about at the end of our meal and chose to leave as opposed to having another drink or dessert as planned. 🌟 Recommendations: Homemade Pizza ⛔️ Drawbacks: Sevice was slow, bland food overall 🦑 Squid Rating: 6/10 🌟🌟🌟/ 5 Stars

We have tried the George before and we were not overly impressed but thought try it again as it's close to we're we live, little disappointed the place is very nice ..typical beamed country pub feel, nice big outside area, the main restaurant area was closed so the seating area was a little cramped but that's fine. We had Calamari Aioli to start, never had it in a floret style before ! batter was soggy and it was basically just 6 squid nuggets in a bed of iceberg lettuce, I tried the fishcakes with poached eggs which were presented quite well they were nice but lacked any real flavour my wife had chicken and ham pie which to me was obviously bought in, huge puff pastry lid with a less then generous filling, the food lacked any real flavour/ seasoning and to be honest a bit underwhelming.

We had a booking on Saturday for 6:30pm. Hardly anyone in the pub, now we know why...

My mum asked for the lamb rump dish but that was not available, so she had to have fish and chips. We wanted rib eye steak which they had however if you wanted sirloin they didn't have it but that's ok because we ordered what we originally wanted. However, they didn't have peppercorn sauce either... on a Saturday evening.

The steaks came out and 1 was a sirloin steak, but they denied it, they clearly don't know steak because the size, shape, fat areas and texture was sirloin. So we paid for a rib eye and got sirloin. Which was over cooked as was my 'rib eye.'

The bearnaise sauce we had to have as no peppercorn was vile... I mean it was a hollandaise with tarragon put in it.

The fish and chips my mum had didn't seem fresh and the batter was THICK to the point where she couldn't eat it because it wasn't cooked.

We know the manageress had been supporting in the kitchen due to chef issues, but clearly no one knows what they are doing there. You pay alot for an awful meal.

There's no care from the manager, my mum even cut her lip on a chip in the wine glass and although the waitress asked for the drink to be free for us, there was no sign of apology from the manageress or any presence of her. As a manager myself, I'd of personally come over to my mum to ensure she wasn't hurt.

Service from the staff were generally miserable especially the faces on them. Except for Tracy. She was hilarious and I'd love to see her again.

Unfortunately we'd been here pre covid and loved it so came back on Saturday as a treat when visiting my mum. But we will not be returning again, so many more pub resturants across Devon to try, you need to...

Very poor experience. Went in mid week for breakfast. Was seen to fast so I give them that and the family picked 1x full English, 1x pancake with pancetta and maple syrup and 1x child mix fruit. We also got a fruit juice for the child and two filtered coffees as its free with the breckfast. We even pointed out on the menu we wanted thouse drinks. 70 mins later the food finally came out. Pancakes where bog standard ones you get from a pack in macros, not pancetta it was normal bacon that had no flavor. Never had that before, flavourless bacon... The full English was below standards also. Where ever they get their meat from, for the love of god chance the supplier. It was nasty! The best thing the wife said about her breckfast was mushroom. The kids breakfast was fine as it just came out of a tin and put into a bowl. Trying to keep a one year old entertained for over an hour was a challenge I wasn't expecting to do. After all that, the wife had to get up and pay and no one came back to the table and after the two people I front of her complained about their food, she paid for ours and was shocked that the drinks are extras. Said on the menu they were included. She got told that she was given the wrong menu. The breakfast menu... At 9:45am, yes we were given the wrong one!?!? And after explaining how we even pointed at the free drinks, reluctantly took it off the bill.

If people want to go for food or drink here, I strongly recommend going down the road 130m to darts farm. Same price food. A lot better standard of food and drink and a lot...

Staff came to take our order munching on carrot. I appreciate staff need to eat/take a break, but think this should be protected time, for the benefit of staff members, and customers. Staff seemed poorly informed about coeliac disease, and relevant menu choices. I wonder if staff are given appropriate training? My friends requested pints of Diet Pepsi, and I requested a half pint of soda and lime. My friends queried the size of the drinks when they arrived, , and we were told they were ‘large’, and ‘medium’, respectively. I appreciate this is a small detail, but this issue could have been avoided by informing us of the sizing when we ordered. My friend asked, politely, to speak to the person in charge, but no one materialised throughout our meal. My friends’ (Sunday roast) meals were cold when they arrived. This was addressed when staff were informed. We informed staff that we had asked to speak to the person in charge whilst we were settling the bill. Staff apologised, but did not offer to secure someone for us to give feedback in person. Consequently, this feedback is in a more public context. I appreciate that hospitality industry is short staffed, and appreciate staff turning up for work. It would presumably be better for staff and customers if appropriate education and training is given in respect of dietary requirements, drink sizes if the customer is unaware of the measures used in the particular establishment, the serving of food at appropriate temperatures, and protected break...
