Updating my review to reflect the new tenancy. TL;DR - Good pub. Great food. Nice concept - something different for the area. Having seen the new menu before the re-open I was keen to visit and try out the gluten free menu. The menu feels progressive and thoughtful with something for everyone. The added bonus is that everything is gluten free- which brings a welcome change to the rest of the pubs in the area as this had previously been something only really found in larger towns/cities. It is with noting this also extends to a selection of gluten free beers. Being an advocate of a gluten reduced diet this is perfect, and the food tastes excellent (if you are worried that the gluten free aspect detracts from the overall taste/quality of the food this is certainly not the case!). Not much, however, can be said for the décor as the inside of the pub was mid renovation when we visited- this didn't present an issue due to COVID restrictions meaning we had to eat outside under a marquee. We are looking forward to seeing what they do to the place! All in all a great dining experience with fab food and attentive service. I hope this pub continues to thrive under its new tenancy whilst maintaining its welcoming and cosy atmosphere. Ps- the website also states the aim is for zero waste after the first year - which is a huge positive in anyone's books!! Pps - go for the gluten free brownie and thank me later!

They have just re-opened so have to give them the benefit of the doubt. A friendly pub with some good beers on offer. A bit disappointing that they weren't prepared for the grand reopening 4 days in to it - not knowing what beers were available, very slow at coming to order but they were rapid on the delivery once spoken with. Hopefully they will be back at their best a few weeks down the line but please focus on your customers rather than your struggle with getting everything moving again.

Came here for lunch via the Watercress Line Heritage Railway as gluten free was mentioned in the reviews. It was a long walk from the station. The whole menu and kitchen is gluten free, but the menu is very limited which dampened the excitement. Such a shame as its a great idea to be fully gluten free. Could do with a few more simple pub classics on the menu like sausages and pies or all day breakfast etc. Still, tasted good with a good range of drinks and friendly staff.

On Sunday the 2nd of November a friend and I had booked for two at 1pm for Sunday lunch, we arrived on time to be met and be seated by two members of staff but the bar was only occupied by 4 people but the tables were laid up and reserved which promised a busy lunch time. We both ordered the Beef and I had a pint of Timothy Tailor my friend had a pint of Lager, Our meals arrived and it's at this point the visit took a down turn, my pet hate in any restaraunt is cold plates and both plates were cold as such the food started to go cold very quickly which was a pity because the food was good, Beef very tasty with crisp fluffy roast potatoes and excellent Yorkshires with gravy in a separate bowl, we mentioned the plates being cold to the waitress and ordered the rhubarb and apple crumble which arrived cold both bowl and content. My friend had another Lager and i had a couple more Beers and requested the bill, at ÂŁ75 we both considered this over the top for what had been cold food and requested them to reconsider the bill, We were told the owner was too busy to come out but the assistant manager/bar man who apologised and reduced the bill by ÂŁ22 which we settled and both of us left wondering if a table of 10 had any problems. We will not be returning but both of us feel the kitchen had thrown the front of house under the bus which was...

I don’t normally review pubs online. But this really did bother me I was Drinking in the George pub ALTON tonight with friends and family, a pub I have been drinking and eating in for years and years, (just a few quiet drinks with my dad and friends tonight ) we got treated so badly by the landlord, Time had been called by the bar staff so we were were drinking up our last drinks ( we were not drunk or Disruptive in anyway), rather aggressively the landlord appreared and we got told that “we had had been told to drink up and so leave now”. We went to leave and the aggressive language continued. It was super unprofessional and saddening to the point he told us we were not welcome back in to his pub!!! Shocking as no one had done anything at all!! After all these years of happy customers of the George 😞 We were not problem whatsoever and it came from nowhere. It’s hard or explain in writing but I highly recommend not drinking in this establishment. It...
