George & Dragon — Restaurant in Elmbridge

We stopped here for a break and something to eat after a long drive as it looked very welcoming from the outside. My wife ordered their jerk chicken with plantain. When it arrived she noticed there was no plantain and was really disappointed. She stopped a waiter and he said he would find out what had happened. He came back and said they were out of plantain, could he replace it with something else. She said ‘ok some fries’. He paused, pulled a face and then made a ‘maybe’ gesture and then said he would see what he could do. After about 10 minutes he came back with 2 breaded halloumi fries and said that this was a compromise as fries sold for £5 so they were not prepared to provide them. My first question is in what universe does breaded halloumi accompany jerk chicken? So they took our money for food they could not provide and said nothing. Then they put the plate with missing food on our table and said nothing. Then they were not prepared to swap the missing item for one of the most generic side dishes on the planet because they could sell it for more money. Bearing in mind breaded halloumi has got absolutely nothing in common with jerk chicken. This place really needs...

Can find the food can be a bit hit and miss, sometimes everything is top notch with good portions, the next time the same food will be different. Burgers do not include sides anymore, this has to be added with the order and has been missed before, perhaps have the staff check (upsell).

On our last visit sour cream was missing from the nachos and the person ordering did not want salsa and so it came with guacamole only. It would have taken the chef simply explaining this before, however it was left to the bar staff to deliver the food and the bad news, the person I was with then felt obliged to eat the food rather than waste it. We went to the george and dragon last night (Mon 29th) and had a lovely dining experience. We were greeted by friendly and attentative staff who had good knowledge of the drinks and ordering process. We then proceeded to the garden which is well kept and a really nice space for outdoor dining and watching sport. The atmosphere was friendly and welcoming this was helped by how polite and helpful the staff where. The food arrived in good timing and we where all pleasantly surprised at how large the portions are. We each had a burger and thoroughly enjoyed them!
