We ordered from this restaurant today. We ordered the lamb chops, Mac n cheese, the curried goat, the falafel wrap, and two portions of peri peri fries. Not only was the order 30 minutes late, the order was missing the correct number of lamb chops, the falafel "wrap" was just falafel and no other filling - it was a tenner bear in mind. The quality was appalling, the lettuce across all meals looked days old. We called twice, once about the lateness and then about the quality. First time we called they were pleasant, then the second time we talked to the manager who was so down right rude, telling us we were in the wrong. It was shocking how he argued against us when we had photo evidence of the state of the food. Absolutely bang out of line. It's such a shame because my parents were so excited to try this restaurant and a cuisine they don't often try. The manager agreed to send us the missing lamb chop and a falafel wrap which will no doubt be another 30 minutes, and to be honest, after the way the manager treated us I will not trust that food to be eaten. The way the restaurant handled the whole situation ruined the entire experience for us. Edit: after trying the falafel wrap it definitely wasn't falafel - it felt and tasted more like meat - on a vegetarian option.

Stepping into Africana Restaurant in Derby is like taking a mini-trip to Africa. The vibrant decor, filled with colorful fabrics and traditional art, immediately sets a warm and inviting atmosphere. The aroma of exotic spices fills the air, promising a culinary adventure. It's not just a meal; it's an immersive cultural experience right in the heart of Derby. The menu is a delightful exploration of African cuisine, featuring dishes from various regions. From the spicy flavors of Nigerian jollof rice to the comforting warmth of South African bobotie, there's something to please every palate. Each dish is prepared with fresh ingredients and authentic recipes, delivering a genuine taste of Africa. Plus, the friendly staff are always ready to guide you through the menu and offer recommendations. While the food is generally excellent, some dishes might be an acquired taste for those unfamiliar with African cuisine. Also, the restaurant can get quite busy, especially on weekends, so booking in advance is recommended. But if you're looking for a unique dining experience that tantalizes your taste buds and broadens your culinary horizons, Africana Restaurant Derby is a must-visit. It's a true gem that brings the flavors of Africa to your doorstep.

Visited this place on a whim whilst out shopping Menu looked interesting and we were quickly seated to a table It wasn’t very busy but there seemed a lot of staff on at the time I ordered the goat curry ( which is actually mutton) and a fish goujon side We also ordered soft drinks Food arrived quickly and was generally very nice although the goujons had been overcooked a little The curry does have bones in being mutton but it was very tasty The only downside was the general service We received the wrong drink which was eventually rectified but then appeared on the bill later and staff didn’t seem sure how to amend this at first We weren’t asked at any point during the meal if all was ok and no one came over until we had finished but there seemed to be staff stood around over by the kitchen just chatting We left and again no one thanked us for coming The lack of detail in the customer service did let the place down sadly but the food was generally good

Where to start? The place was filled with flies, before some big stoned looking guy came out the back and sprayed everywhere in bug spray, which enveloped me and my food in poison. The waitress was extremely inexperienced, didn't realise the cider they serve was alcohol free, and gave the impression that some cocktails had alcohol in them when they don't. Also forgot our order so had to come back to take again.

Then there's the food, chicken wings were enveloped in a thick batter so the skin was unpleasantly soggy and fatty and uncooked in parts (probably due to extremely thick batter). The wings themselves were a bit dull, and even their extensive range of hot sauces couldn't salvage. The curry in the bread was incinerated in a microwave or oven so much that there was no liquidity left in it and the meat was extremely dry and tough. It's a shame as the flavor of the curry was otherwise nice.

Then there's the toilet. The communal area is unisex with gendered toilet stalls inside. The toilet stall as you immediately walk in is male, but if you need to go to the toilet and sit down, there are large gaps in the middle of the folding door (well, not door, shutters really) so women and children walking past can see everything while you're sat down, making a visit impossible. Also, there's no lock on the shutters, so it can easily be opened while you're on the toilet.

Fair enough if this was a really cheap, extremely shabby cafe/pub, but the prices this places charges are not remotely comparable to the quality of food, level of staffing, nor the facilities (there were more issues too, but these are the main ones). It's like the people running the place have no experience in how to run a restaurant. They're overlooking important, fundamental issues that I fear may result in the demise of their business if they're not remedied, as I can't be the only one who now has no...

After our first visit 5 months ago to Afrikana which was great i decided to go for lunch today with my baby grandson my partner and my son. We got there at 11.55am just before it opened - the staff were still moping the floor!!! We waited for 20 mins for drinks which were good however after 40 mins we still had not got our food order and my grandson was hungry and irritable I asked the waiter what was happening and he apologised (waiter was very nice/friendly) saying they were waiting on rice - still waited and my partner noticed that people who had come in 20 mins after us were served and served rice!! Eventually we got our food that was okay however there was a further wait for my sons food in the end after an hour and 15 mins of waiting we cancelled my sons food (he had drove from nottingham not eaten to Derby with my grandson and had been looking forward to it as well.) I was so annoyed I asked to see the manager who made excuses about rice not being ready etc I advised the manager that the re were two tables that came in after us at least 20 mins who were served had eaten and had left and we still hadn't got our food! Also another table who had also come in after us had served rice while we were waiting. The managers reply and customer service was absolutely shocking another rude looking guy who had constantly been on his phone just looked disinterested and didn't deny he had been serving his mates first! - I told him that we weren't stupid it was clear that the two tables that they had served either side of us were their friends who had been served platters of food had eaten and left while we were made to wait. The waiting staff (guy) was lovely he was constantly going to the kitchen and telling the chefs that we had been waiting but they ignored him and served their mates. Disgusting. We will not...

So we were a group of 3. We had booked a table for 7pm, we arrived 5 minutes early and were asked to wait which was fine until 30 minutes later we still had no table. We spoke to a man who reported to be the owner, he offered us a drink each 'on him' he said and apologised for the wait. He said he will throw in a dessert... kind gesture again. When we ordered he gave us 3 extra chicken wings kind again. Once we finished our meal we wanted to order dessert (which we planned to have any way, free on not free). We ordered 3 desserts The waiter taking our order said rudely..are you sure? One cake is enough for 4 people to share (it felt like he said that because we were offered free desserts) we told him again, we want 3 desserts. The dessert sizes were no larger than anywhere else and were for one person. So we did ask him why he had claimed it was enough for 4 people, he stated, 'you didnt even finish your chicken, thats why I said it'. My friend replied we like desserts and saved room for dessert to which he replied ' oh I didnt know you had a GAME PLAN!!!', We found this very offensive! It felt like he was implying that we made sure to order dessert as we were told it was going to be on the house. The owner did not come back to us. We told the waiter to add the desserts to the bill which he did. We also asked him to add the drinks we were given whilst waiting so long which he did. We walked away embarrased but very happy that we paid for the 'freebies' we were offered for our inconvinience. Africano waiter... please know that there was no game plan and we would much rather pay twice over than to be insulted. Thanks for your slow service and only just average food however, we will not be...
