This is a great little hidden gem in Warkworth. We'd been out geocaching around the castle and wandering around the the countryside and were in need of some food. We'd seen this place on the start of our ramblings so thought we'd give it a try. Arriving we found it was full and there was a queue outside but by leaving your name inside we didn't have to wait long to be seated. When out and about, we always have a hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows. Here we were not disappointed and we even got extra marshmallows!! Absolutely wonderful especially as the drink itself was quite bitter but the marshmallows added that extra sweetness without having to add sugar. The food we had was delicious. I had the soup, tomato, pepper and basil. My husband had a ham salad sarny. He loved it. The only thing that let the place down was the cakes. There's loads on display and look delicious so we got some carrot cake and rhubarb and custard cake to go. We were so looking forward to having them at home but we were both hugely disappointed with both types of cake. At £3.95 a slice we would expect something amazing but we both felt they were second rate and too expensive to boot. However, when we return to Warkworth in the future, we won't hesitate to call back to...
Read moreI have just returned from a three day stay at Bertram’s. It was a relatively late booking and I went on my own, as the trip was primarily to look at moving to Northumberland. I had no expectations of the place and was a little nervous as I was flying solo. Eating on your own in a restaurant at night can be awkward at the best of times. I had no need to worry. The place was just perfect. I was given a very warm welcome and by the end of my stay the staff were all asking how my house search was going and giving friendly tips and advice on the area. Service was given with a smile, which I welcomed. The food was exceptional and the highlight of my trip. I haven’t eaten this well in years and I’ve eaten at some very upmarket establishments. Portion sizes were generous too. My room was clean and comfortable and it was the little touches which were lovely. Coffee machine, proper milk in a fridge, nice toiletries, that made the difference. Warkworth is a lovely village and I really enjoyed my stay. I didn’t plan to have dinner every night in Bertram’s but ended up there every time because by the end it felt like a big warm hug. Thank you to the staff. I will be back again - maybe soon...
Read moreWe ate here today at lunch after years of meaning to. Food was presented well and tasted lovely. We were welcomed by a friendly member of staff and was given a table straight away but the overall visit was tainted by the service of the waitress working the area we were sat in. I understand everyone has their own issues and problems with life but this woman looked like she felt totally miserable and like she’d rather be elsewhere. There was no eye contact, smiles, no thank yous or any sort of niceties. I noticed another table comment on how she was so it clearly wasn’t a problem with just us. We waited a long time for our main plates to be collected but there was no sign of the waitress, she’d disappeared. We had planned to order a dessert to share and coffees but in the end a member of our party decided to square up the bill herself at the till and we got dessert from somewhere else nearby instead.
I really wanted our visit to be amazing. The food was great thankfully but I’m not sure if I would rush back or recommend to others purely because of the experience...
