After a wonderful day with my mam in her training for a charity cycle ride, we stopped off at the Bowes Museum café. It was such an amazing experience, made all the better by the incredible staff – they were so friendly, welcoming, and genuinely interested in what we’d been up to. We sat outside the museum in a beautiful setting and enjoyed fantastic food and drinks – some of the best I’ve had in a long time. The staff really made the visit special and left us smiling. Really worth going, whether you’re visiting the museum or just passing through Barnard Castle. Highly recommended!

What a lovely cafe! Friendly staff and delicious food. We visited today for lunch for my husband's 40th, with our 5 year old son. We sat in a window table with a gorgeous view. I had a sandwich and soup, my husband had the Katsu curry and son had mash and beans, then for dessert I had the best ginger cake I've ever eaten. Portion sizes are generous and the staff is extremely welcoming and accommodating. Looking forward to returning soon.

Excellent cafe, food was super tasty and packed with local produce. Service was very fast and all surfaces were spotless. Overall light and bright with relaxing layout. We tried the Bowes Rarebit and the Ploughman's with a side of Fries. Then the homemade Carrot Cake with lashings of Tea. Loved how fresh it all looked and tasted. Will definitely return.

We visited the Museum for the first time as a birthday treat on a rainy day. The museum itself is fantastic.

However, after all the viewing we needed a drink and a sit down, so we headed to the cafe. Now, due to backache, tiredness and a long-term serious illness, my mum walked straight through as no one was queuing and seeing a free table but not noticing the 'please wait to be seated sign' which was to the side at the time, and not entirely obvious.

The waitress came marching over and was extremely curt. We were told to read the sign and told off like little children. The rude waitress then stated to her colleague that she would not speak to us or deal with us.

We had it confirmed to us that this was not an isolated event. We complained to the cafe manager, who was apologetic and said that she knew exactly which member of staff we meant and that they have had numerous problems with her and that usually this staff member would have been working out back due to it being a busy period (school holidays). We had to have her working on the main floor. We were then offered some drinks but declined, feeling incredibly uncomfortable being served by someone who behaved like that.

If a member of staff is known to be rude to customers, they should not be working in a public environment.

You never know what people have going on in their public life. There is a way to be diplomatic, or point things out in a calm, professional manor. As much as we loved the museum, the sheer aggressive, rude behavior of this membership of staff put us...

What a beautiful place to visit....❤️👀😁.... The history of the museum is amazing because it was one of the childhood homes to our very much loved The Queen Mother.... and secondly the Bowes Museum collection was so that the people of the UK 🇬🇧 and Worldwide.... could see such beautiful objects that were around at that time especially with French influences.... There are so many artefacts that you would need hours to view them all... To go your own pace and just looking at the many displays takes a good couple of hours.... Remember to visit the well stocked café of foods to fill many an empty tummy... 😋... And don't forget to treat yourself to a small gift....nice selection of things to...
