FYR restaurant or FYRE festival? Both tragic and overpriced failures. Will not be back. Honestly, the only good thing about this restaurant is the wait staff who are absolutely lovely. For a £65 Chateaubriand steak, we would expect it to be cooked as requested. We requested medium rare and after a 45 minute wait were given a we’ll done, dry steak. After asking the waitress to check with the chef how the steak was cooked, we were told by a near tears waitress (who was clearly just yelled at by the chef) the steak was medium rare. It was not. She offered to get the chef to prepare it again for us, however it again would have been another 45 minute wait. In lieu, she offered us fillet steaks instead. The picture is what we got. If the chef thinks this is how you cook a medium rare steak, should he really be working in a grill house? Appalling. We would have sent it back again had we been confident the chef wouldn’t just abuse the poor waitress again. Listen to the Google reviews, save your money and literally eat any where else. After a £120 dinner, we walked to ALDI down the road and had a better meal. Ridiculous.

Great food but I was a little disappointed that my 10oz rib eye steak only comes with fries, no mushrooms, tomatoes or onions, everything to be ordered separately, I did swap my fries for the buttered mixed veg, as I'm allergic to butter they didn't put any butter on, mixed veg consists of 1 sugar snap pea, 1 string bean, 1 very small carrot cut in half and a few wilted spring greens, I would have enjoyed them all if they hadn't been cooked in mint, no mention of mint on the menu, fresh veg does not need masking with any other flavour. My steak was ÂŁ24 so I don't feel it was good value for money however it was cooked exactly as I asked which was medium. My husband had the tandoori salmon kebab which was much better value consisting of large chunks of salmon, monk fish and prawns and came with side orders included ÂŁ20, he realy enjoyed it and would have it again if we go back. The staff were very friendly and well presented. The surroundings were lovely, airy and bright. A lovely place to dine.

Before going to the restaurant, we had cocktails in the bar lounge. It was a nice relaxed atmosphere, with open fire and the bar staff were helpful. I had a Negroni Sevilla, which was more bitter than I am used too but was still nice and my husband had an old fashioned, which was delicious. In the restaurant, we were asked our preference on where to sit and the maitre d’ was very accommodating on giving us our choice of table. To start we had olives and King Prawns from the grill, both of which were delicious. For mains, I had chicken kebab and my husband had sirloin steak. The peri peri sauce on the kebab seemed like an after thought and didn’t taste like the chicken had been marinated in it and then barbecued. Mixed with the roti and slaw, it tasted fine but wasn’t amazing. The sirloin had a good flavour and texture. The wine which was the red GSM was good.

50th birthday celebration.

Sadly I have to say, after being very excited by the decor and layout of FYR, the resulting experience was quite frankly terrible. My sister and daughter had booked a table for us to celebrate my 50th birthday as we were on a short break in nearby Askham. The gentleman who greeted us upon our arrival was very welcoming, however we were quickly passed on to junior staff. My sister had called FYR 3 times prior to our arrival to remind the establishment of the occasion, she asked for a cake to be arranged, due to Covid this could not be done but the restaurant kindly offered a “birthday plate” instead. Under the circumstances, a fair compromise yes? Well, we’ll see how that went later. My starter was Minestrone Soup, now I can’t say with any certainty as I wasn’t in their kitchen but if it wasn’t from a can I would be hugely surprised. From memory I think it’s priced at around £7. It claimed to be served with bread and butter. However, it was served with what should be described as a slither of bread which plainly wasn’t sufficient. The bread sadly (what there was of it) was good quality. The main course was from the “specials” menu. It was a passable Lamb pudding. Given the table was booked for a special occasion, no mention was made of this by any staff member throughout the whole visit. As for the “birthday plate” no sign whatsoever! Rather upset by it’s absence my sister attempted to contact a member of staff however they were in another room preparing breakfast tables for the next mornings hotel guests.

The final straw was seeing my sister, having given up on the “birthday plate” searching around the restaurant so she could simply pay our bill. Had we been that kind of people, we could have simply just walked out.

All in all despite the very smart and welcoming location, the service within is shocking and the food below average. I certainly hope my family do not entrust FYR with any future...

Overpriced and Underwhelming!

Firstly my partner and my steak were served the wrong way around which nearly led to my partner sending the steak back. I ordered steak medium and it came well done, the steak tasted nice but obviously the more you cook the meat the less flavour it has which was a big shame. The peppercorn sauce tasted like it either came out of a very cheap packet or had a few key ingredients missing, I've had much better pre made supermarket packet sauces and the snores chocolate brownie sundae is without a doubt the worst dessert I have ever been served anywhere!!! It was vanilla ice cream with what we're clearly supermarket bought brownies mixed in (which tasted stale) and there was no chocolate sauce, looked like a half arsed effort at the end of the night which looked noting like the picture of the dessert. It was so bad the waitress didn't even ask about the dessert when she cleared the plates as she clearly knew what our response would be. Overall a very disappointing meal and I wish I'd taken a closer look at the reviews before I wasted our time by eating there. Unfortunately as we stayed in the hotel it seemed like a good idea to eat at the hotel restaurant but if you've taken the time to read these reviews save yourself the disappointment and take the time to find somewhere...

After a stellar breakfast we had high hopes for FYR for our dinner. I rang ahead and told them it was a special night as it was our anniversary as well as my partners birthday, which the restaurant promised they'd do something special for my partner. The starters I cannot complain with apart from the typical Yorkshire response that ÂŁ14 for two scallops is daylight robbery. It's the mains that really kaiboshed the evening. We opted for the signature steaks, at ÂŁ25 a piece, served with chips, confit garlic and a tomato. what we received was a plate with enough surface area for a sharing platter, containing a handful of chips, a steak Canadian, and half a tomato. When I said to the server that I was underwhelmed by the provided food she said "we serve it by weight". There is no listed weight for the signature steak.

My partner went on to order an apple crumble, which she left half of as she described it like "eating gravel with some apple under it"

When asked again if our food was okay, I explained I'd passed my comments on to another server, and when presented with the bill, which we paid in full, instead of handing it to my outstretched hand, the server placed it on the table and walked off.

Long story short, no effort made for a special occasion, and mediocre food at much higher prices. (Unless...
