50th birthday celebration.
Sadly I have to say, after being very excited by the decor and layout of FYR, the resulting experience was quite frankly terrible. My sister and daughter had booked a table for us to celebrate my 50th birthday as we were on a short break in nearby Askham. The gentleman who greeted us upon our arrival was very welcoming, however we were quickly passed on to junior staff. My sister had called FYR 3 times prior to our arrival to remind the establishment of the occasion, she asked for a cake to be arranged, due to Covid this could not be done but the restaurant kindly offered a âbirthday plateâ instead. Under the circumstances, a fair compromise yes? Well, weâll see how that went later. My starter was Minestrone Soup, now I canât say with any certainty as I wasnât in their kitchen but if it wasnât from a can I would be hugely surprised. From memory I think itâs priced at around ÂŁ7. It claimed to be served with bread and butter. However, it was served with what should be described as a slither of bread which plainly wasnât sufficient. The bread sadly (what there was of it) was good quality. The main course was from the âspecialsâ menu. It was a passable Lamb pudding. Given the table was booked for a special occasion, no mention was made of this by any staff member throughout the whole visit. As for the âbirthday plateâ no sign whatsoever! Rather upset by itâs absence my sister attempted to contact a member of staff however they were in another room preparing breakfast tables for the next mornings hotel guests.
The final straw was seeing my sister, having given up on the âbirthday plateâ searching around the restaurant so she could simply pay our bill. Had we been that kind of people, we could have simply just walked out.
All in all despite the very smart and welcoming location, the service within is shocking and the food below average. I certainly hope my family do not entrust FYR with any future...

Firstly my partner and my steak were served the wrong way around which nearly led to my partner sending the steak back. I ordered steak medium and it came well done, the steak tasted nice but obviously the more you cook the meat the less flavour it has which was a big shame. The peppercorn sauce tasted like it either came out of a very cheap packet or had a few key ingredients missing, I've had much better pre made supermarket packet sauces and the snores chocolate brownie sundae is without a doubt the worst dessert I have ever been served anywhere!!! It was vanilla ice cream with what we're clearly supermarket bought brownies mixed in (which tasted stale) and there was no chocolate sauce, looked like a half arsed effort at the end of the night which looked noting like the picture of the dessert. It was so bad the waitress didn't even ask about the dessert when she cleared the plates as she clearly knew what our response would be. Overall a very disappointing meal and I wish I'd taken a closer look at the reviews before I wasted our time by eating there. Unfortunately as we stayed in the hotel it seemed like a good idea to eat at the hotel restaurant but if you've taken the time to read these reviews save yourself the disappointment and take the time to find somewhere...
Read moreAfter a stellar breakfast we had high hopes for FYR for our dinner. I rang ahead and told them it was a special night as it was our anniversary as well as my partners birthday, which the restaurant promised they'd do something special for my partner. The starters I cannot complain with apart from the typical Yorkshire response that £14 for two scallops is daylight robbery. It's the mains that really kaiboshed the evening. We opted for the signature steaks, at £25 a piece, served with chips, confit garlic and a tomato. what we received was a plate with enough surface area for a sharing platter, containing a handful of chips, a steak Canadian, and half a tomato. When I said to the server that I was underwhelmed by the provided food she said "we serve it by weight". There is no listed weight for the signature steak.
My partner went on to order an apple crumble, which she left half of as she described it like "eating gravel with some apple under it"
When asked again if our food was okay, I explained I'd passed my comments on to another server, and when presented with the bill, which we paid in full, instead of handing it to my outstretched hand, the server placed it on the table and walked off.
Long story short, no effort made for a special occasion, and mediocre food at much higher prices. (Unless...
