Yorkshire's largest freshwater lake. A mere is a body of water wider than it it is deep, with no river feeding it. Water is from ground drainage. Beautiful place, the sun shimmering on the water and the sunsets are fabulous (gates close early evening). Whats at the Mere: Cafe Boathouse - hire and trips (see photos for what's on offer and pricing) Gift Shop Hornsea Sailing Club Water Fowl Reedbeds Mini Putting Green just past the Cafe (currently £3, pay at the Boathouse) Benches (memorial) to sit and relax Accessibility - long drive in, car park (gravelled and some slopes, people can be dropped off nearer the buildings). Accessible toilets in the Cafe. Cafe - decent range if good, be specific if vegetarian or vegan. See photos for current menu. Price range medium. Children's menu also available on the tables. Staff (in each business) - friendly. Toilets - in the Cafe

Me and my partner took our two children rowing for the first time. I used to go when I was a child and loved it. We got there fairly early, around 10.30, and it was fab. They each had a turn at rowing (and were terrible) and they ran their hands in the water when we rowed. They had a great time and didn't want to leave. We all got fitted with a life jacket before we left the dock, so it was perfectly safe. It was £15 for the 4 of us to row for an hour. There were boats sailing on the mere, and only a couple of other row boats. We didn't go in the cafe unfortunately, but we will be next time (and there will definitely be a next time) as my dad has informed me that the brownies and cakes are excellent 😁😁

A lovely day out for the family, ample parking, lovely views of the Mere and wildlife. A small cafe serving a variety of food. Kids menu is a little pricey for what you get, £4.50 for just 1 sausage and chips. However the staff were friendly and the toilets were clean. The highlight of the visit was the boat trip, it was to windy for a rowing boat. Instead we were passengers on a small motor boat and had a 25min tour of the Mere. Really interesting guide and the kids even got to have a go steering the boat! Will be returning soon.

Arrived in camper van with mother and father in-law, mother-in-law has dementia and can hardly walk, thought we would go visit and give her a chance for short walk from car park to cafe, got her walker out and made for cafe. Cafe shut lovely hot sunny Thursday in early sept, managed to sit her down on a bench set and brought camper over to where she was sitting with father in-law and my wife, thought ok can make a cuppa for us all, the camper was parked without causing any bother, kettle on the boil cups on bench set when a voice piped up 'can you shift van and put it on car park', not a walk over and understand the situation!!! (It's more than my jobs worth). Oks shifted van hobbled mother in law back into van, having cuppa and sweating in van, when over he comes to the van and states the gates will be locked in twenty minutes!! Good old UK, well done Jobs worth, God knows what European tourists think of our superb...

I took my granddaughter and grandson 2 & 6 to go rowing on the mear which is the biggest lake on yorkshire apparently! Very disappointed that they was out of use because of a choppy lake! So we went on an old pleasure boat instead which cost £8 for One adult and the kids which was fair for about 30 mins! The vendor could be a bit more friendlier but hey maybe he’s just a miserable sod! The cafe is small and alright for a cuppa and a sandwich! Strange in this day and age it was cash only which was ridiculous and would make many give it a miss as it’s a couple of miles drive to the nearest cash point! The mear itself is a very peaceful pretty place in spring and summer and it was an early sunny september afternoon so it vas very tranquil without many people around! Well worth a...
