After seeing this place and reading the excellent reviews we popped in at 15:00 just on the chance and fortunately got a table. It’s a very small venue but the decor is lovely with a comfortable, more intimate feel about it. My wife and I loved it. We were sat at a table near the back and the service was excellent - a friendly and attentive waiter, who described dishes, gave advice and even took a couple of nice photos for us to post on social media. The reviews here may have overhyped the food a little. It was very good but, if I can be a little critical here, had some negatives: the fish pie was mostly mash and a huge ‘tree’ of broccoli, only getting to some meaty chunks of fish around the half-way mark. My wife thought the portions were just ok and I did end up eating some of her dish - a nice curried Sea bass dish. If you have a larger appetite it might be worth ordering an extra side. The starters were perhaps the better meals. My chilli crab soup was delicious and my wife’s pan fried scallops were also very tasty. This latter dish is served with an anchovy paste which totally overpowered the more subtle scallop flavour when she tried it but it’s was easy enough to scrape off. Prices were somewhat high but seafood quality was excellent. A very enjoyable experience. Thank...
Read moreWe were really looking forward to visiting Jaspers as we love seafood. It's a lovely looking restaurant with just 4/5 tables. The menu looked great, the service was good too. The music was a bit loud & not to our liking (swing). The food was a let down. We had: mussels which had several broken shells in the bowl. The prawn cocktail with samphire had two bits of samphire in my serving & desperately needed something crisp to balance the very nice prawns & sauce. A bit of lettuce or cucumber would have made it. Unfortunately neither of our mains were very nice. Form over substance. The recommended fish pie was way over cheesy, lumps of soft cheese didn't help. The amount of cheese spoiled the dish. I had the fish of the day, it was very greasy. The fish was well cooked but the potatoes were full of pock marked black dots which left them bitter. A bit of care in preparation would have been appreciated as I couldn't eat them. I also had a hair in my dish. I left hungry. My husband was full but the heavy cheese took all night to settle on his stomach. It is such a shame as we normally love this type...
Read moreWe live locally and have been crying out for a restaurant like this. During the day it's a wonderful little cafe / bistro serving your traditional English breakfasts and cafe fayre. In the evenings it transforms into a lovely cosy restaurant. The chef, Ryan, is a credit to his profession. You can see that he takes great pride in every meal he turns out, be that as a cafe or as a restaurant. We've been several times for dinner and are regulars for breakfast and lunch and we love it.
The menu is varied and covers fish, steak and vegetarian dishes, all cooked with patience and care. I can personally vouch for his steak medallions with black pudding and my wife swears by the crab soup, however, we've had a few dishes off the menu and have not been disappointed yet.
Currently, as of late December 2016, they are still applying for an alcohol licence, so it's bring your own bottle.
Writing this review is hard because I really love this place yet the more people who know about it the less likely I am to be able to get a table :o) but seriously, give it a try, I'm sure you won't be...
