WARNING: Staff left my door unlocked and open!
The primary issue was that the door to my room did not close all the way. I was assigned room 10 and when I arrived, I noticed that the door was unlocked and stuck open about 1cm. Enough to simply push the door open without using the key. There is no door knob or handle outside the door to hang the “do not disturb” sign on.
The next morning I left my room and closed and locked my door with my assigned key. I confirmed it was completely closed and locked. When I returned later in the evening my door was unlocked and open. Housekeeping staff had made my bed and provided new towels. Fortunately, none of my belongings were missing. If housekeeping staff usually clean rooms mid-day then my room was unlocked and unattended for multiple hours. This is unacceptable and a significant security issue for guests.
I talked to the staff and manager during my check out on to explain the issue. I received a reluctant apology and they said they would refund one night’s cost. I told them I appreciate this but also explained that a fix for the issue is more important than any refund. They said they were already aware of the problem and it should be fixed within the next month. They said they have told the housekeeping staff to lock the rooms upon exit (which obviously didn’t happen). I was very surprised and disappointed in this response. If it was a known issue, it should be fixed immediately. I politely thanked them for the partial refund and left.
Also, the light in the bathroom was broken, the shower knob was broken, the bath towel was stained, and the TV remote was very old and the buttons were sticky. I told the staff about the issues and they were not fixed during my stay. Finally, I asked for a printed receipt of my bill and their printer was broken or not working.
Overall, you need to have very low expectations when staying here. BUT it is a great location if you want to be next to the university. And the restaurant is cheap and has a decent menu. Nice Bar area.
I will not be staying here again and I will not be recommending...
Read moreWe have just arrived back from a stay at the Grey Mare Inn in Hull. Unfortunately we don’t have a very good review with regards to our stay at this accommodation. Firstly we would like to highlight that the staff that we had the pleasure of meeting were very courteous and friendly. Especially the staff who worked on (6th January) afternoon and evening and also Friday 7th for morning breakfast were exceptional.
Unfortunately, the room was a huge disappointment. Furthermore the room was in need of total refurbishment and I would contend it was unclean. When we arrived inside the room every window in the room was wide open. This appeared to be an attempt to clear the smell which was apparent. We had no shower facilities for the whole of our stay, which to us is a basic requirement for all guests. Despite this fault being reported, this was never acted upon.
Every evening during our stay, in room 17, the music noise coming from the downstairs was totally unacceptable. My husband requested that the music be moderated, the gentleman said he would so but in fact turned the music up. This proceeded till 12.20.
What is extremely disappointing about the noise is that my husband advised the gentlemen that we had attended a funeral in Hull that day, were tired and emotional, and wanted to unwind. The fact that the volume was turned up is crass and insensitive.
The only positives from our stay were the courtesy of a number of staff, particularly the lady who manned breakfast and reception on Saturday 8th February.
However, the kindness of some staff did not make up for a negative experience.
As a result of our unhappiness and disappointment my husband and I decided to cut our trip short and return home.

Read moreA little bit disappointing on our visit. Popped in for lunch with my Daughter on Wednesday 21st June. We did our order on the mobile app. Ordered Drinks and 2 steak and ale pies. Drinks did come fairly quickly but no interaction with the staff member no greeting or chit chat. Just walked up said " Two diet cokes" and put them on the table and walked off. Then had a 15 to 20 minute wait for our meal. When they arrived by a different member of staff again no interaction just said " two steak and ale pies" put them on the table and walked off. Oh how I wish she had walked back into the kitchen with them. They were very average. Now I know they were on the 2 for 1 menu but I didn't know that was 1 potion between 2 . Apart from the pie which I will get to in a moment there was 10 chips and ½ a scoop of peas and the gravy was so thick you could almost slice it. Now the pie. It was poor. Looked large but very little filling and the pastry was rock hard. I left most of it. My daughter was paying for our meal so I didn't want to complain as not to embarrass her. And to top it off not once did anyone come over to ask if the meal was ok and when the staff member came back to collect the plates she just asked if we had finished took the plates and walked off, so whe had interaction of 3 sentences from the staff. When pubs are struggling with the high cost of living you really would expect a little bit more of an effort to make you want to go back again. Sadly we won't be hurrying back...
