I first went to the Royal Oak in Nailsea about 37 years ago. Then it was packed solid with plenty of decent ciders, beers and a great atmosphere. Well I am not 24 anymore and although slowed down, and with my 88 & 86yr old parents tagging along I had no high expectations. Good job to as the place is abismal. We had my dog with me and I asked if she was allowed in which she was. No surprise there as they need as many breathing entities as possible, we really didn't help much on that front with my father nearing 90 and my mother following along beside him,I had terrible thoughts that I may be asked if we were looking for Pure Cremations, but had a retort to do with the food if that question turned up. So we had only time to kill as their dog was being cut and fluffed at some dog spa in Nailsea and wouldn't be ready for an hour. At the bar we realised that there wasn't much good lager, cider or beer. 4% so water basically. The menus were on the tables. We ordered gammon egg chips, pineapple x2 and a scampi and chips no peas. The waitress wanted us to pay before eating, probably frightened we may leg it at 90yr old with Cancer speed. After paying we were then informed that the cooking was 20 minutes behind. Must be due to the hard work in cooking food for 3 adults and a cute kid who wanted to ride my dog around the semi empty pub....40 minutes later I reminded the waitress/ bar tender about the time and was told that it should be ready in another 10 minutes. Well after an hour the food arrives. No salt in the seller so I go to a empty table to get one. Get back and realised the vinegar was non existent until I saw a Sarsons bottle on the salt table. Got up again only to find it was empty...then a customer comes to the rescue, sound must travel, like in a cave. A almost full bottle of Sarsons, great. Paper hand wipers....non on our table but yet again the salt table came to the rescue. The food was good for what it was. The gammon steaks looked and tasted great. The breaded whitebait scampi was in it's own dish on my plate with chips and peas which I didn't order. Well we had been in there for 90 minutes and I couldn't wait to go. Neither did my parents. So we went out at lightning speed causing a few leaves to move. We shan't be returning. How that place survives is beyond me. With the watered down, well low alcohol content beers and lagers, ciders, the younger generation of today must be bringing in their own flasks of vodka to put in the fruit flavoured ciders to get any effect from the taps but with at least 6 large TVs the football must be having a large audience to keep the pub going. I'm glad I'm not young in this age. Today really brought back some nostalgia only due from the wrong perspective...

Read moreWe have eaten here many times and as before the food was excellent. Unfortunately this time the whole meal was spoilt by a large group of loud drunk teenagers on the next table, the staff didn't seem to care about theirs behaviour even though it was only 6.30pm. We ate our food as quickly as we could and left, instead of staying for the evening. We walked a few minutes along the road to Coates house where they seem to care more about all of their customers experiences. Looks like they will be getting our custom...
